COUNSELING IN THE
K-12 PROGRAM

guidance and timely information in order for them to be fully
prepared when the time comes in choosing their career

to some 289 Registered Guidance Counselors (RGCs),
Guidance Counselor-Designates, and Career Advocates (CAs)
in the Third Regional Career Advocacy Congress (RCAC).
WHERE ARE WE?(REAL SCENARIO)
•Majority who do not pursue college
•Too young to enter the labor force
•Those who intend to go into business too
young to legally enter into contracts

GC DEFINED
• Guidance and Counseling is a helping relationship.
• The helping relationship is aimed to meet the needs of the
counselee.
• It is aimed that the counselee shall assume responsibility for
himself, make his own decisions based on alternatives and
approaches.
• Counselors assist and support counselees so they can come to
terms with their problems by exploration, understanding, and
constructive action.
WHAT IS GUIDANCE?
• According to Aquino and Alviar, Guidance tends to help the
individual to become adjusted to his present situation so as to
provide maximum development for him and to help him plan for
his future based on his capabilities and needs.
• Crow and Crow give their definition of guidance by stating what
guidance is not. According to them, guidance is not giving
direction. It is not imposing one’s point of view upon another
person. It is not making decisions for the person seeking
assistance. It is not carrying the burden of another life.
• Guidance is pre-problem.
WHAT IS COUNSELING?
• According to Dinkmeyer (1996) it is a personal relationship between a
counselee and a professionally trained counselor who aims to assist him
to communicate and meet his immediate needs and problems.
• Blocker (1996) says that it is an interaction process which facilitates
meaningful understanding of self and environment. The process results
in the establishment and/or clarification of goals and values for future
behavior.
• Toribio (1976) presents what counseling is not. She said, it is not the
giving of advice. It is not forcing beliefs, attitudes, or behavior by
persuasion or coercion. It is not assigning or selecting goals or jobs for
individuals. Rather, it is providing conditions which facilitate voluntary
change.
• Counseling is post-problem.
WHY MUST THE COUNSELOR NOT BE INVOLVED IN
THE ACTUAL ADMINISTRATION AND PUNISHMENT?
• It is the function of guidance to help the individual
understand why the behavior is unacceptable which
results to punishment by some authorities. The
counselor should not be involved in the actual
administration of punishment of the student, nor work
to free him from any punishment like a defense
lawyer. This is so because it would be difficult to
establish and maintain rapport that is necessary for
counseling and guidance.
GROUP GC VS INDIVIDUAL GC
• Group GC is any group activity in which the primary purpose is to assist
each individual in the group to solve his problems and make
adjustments. It discusses problems common to a group, develops
awareness that problems are also shared by others, broadens the
horizons of students with reference to occupational choice available to
them.
• Individual GC is given to a single person at a time. Ordonez enumerates
the most common cases brought to the Guidance Clinic by individuals.
They include 1. ambition, 2. choice of school, 3. failing grades, 4.
personality maladjustment, 5. choice of a vocation, 6. employment, 7.
physical or mental handicap, 8. family problem
GUIDANCE SERVICES
• 1. INDIVIDUAL INVENTORY—information gathered about
each individual in school that can be available for reference,
can be used for proper diagnoses, predicting progress and
behaviors, accurate placement, and program evaluation. This
can include the PDS, anecdotal report, anecdotal record,
rating scales, checklists, autobiography, self-expression essay,
self-description essay, diaries, questionnaires, structured
interviews, disciplinary decision, test results

• 2. INFORMATION
• “Nobody can make appropriate decisions without pertinent
information.”
• KINDS: personal-social (How one can improve oneself or relationship
with others), academic-educational, vocational-occupational
• Major Methods of Dissemination: Printed Material, Small Group
Guidance Activity, Homeroom/Classroom Guidance,
Seminars/Symposia/Conferences
GUIDANCE SERVICES
• 3. COUNSELING—academic, vocational, persona;/social, diet,
crisis counseling, bereavement, pastoral, leisure counseling,
addiction counseling
• THE COUNSELING PROCESS: Relationship Building, Assessment and
Diagnosis, Formulation of Counseling Goals, Intervention and Problem
Solving, Termination and Follow-Up

•4. CONSULTATION—allows work with clients to
be facilitated
•In the school setting, C’lors consult with
administrators, teachers, students, parents, and
other stakeholders.

• 5. PREVENTION AND WELLNESS
• 3 LEVELS of Prevention
• Primary (people who are not presently afflicted by the disorder), Secondary (focuses on
those who are experiencing early onset), Tertiary (deals with individuals already
afflicted by the disorder and are being helped to manage it)
• For efficacy, prevention program should be implemented before onset of indicators,
targets populations not individuals, consider the uniqueness of the population and
their environment.
• WELLNESS—counselors should be involved in programs promoting lifestyle change for
healthy living

•6. REFERRAL—the tapping of agencies,
organizations, or individuals that may be of
better assistance in the counselee’s
resolution of problems and attainment of
goals.

• 7. PLACEMENT the facilitation of the client’s
movement to the appropriate
educational/occupational level or program; entry into
the appropriate co-curricular and extra-curricular
activities, pursuit of further education or other
employment upon leaving the institution.

•8. FOLLOW-UP
•The appraisal of how counselees who have been
counseled, placed, or referred or have
graduated are doing, to determine whether
further assistance is necessary.

Guidance and counseling in the k 12 program

Reforms in our educational system, evidently seen and realized in the DepEd’s K-12 program, have given new challenges for us to come up with effective strategies in providing our students the proper guidance and timely information in order for them to be fully prepared when the time comes in choosing their career paths.”—DOLE Assistant Regional Director Geraldine Panlilio to some 289 Registered Guidance Counselors (RGCs), Guidance Counselor-Designates, and Career Advocates (CAs) in the Third Regional Career Advocacy Congress (RCAC).
  • 3. WHERE ARE WE?(REAL SCENARIO) •Majority who do not pursue college •Too young to enter the labor force •Those who intend to go into business too young to legally enter into contracts
  • 4. WHAT HAVE THE DEPED DONE? •RHGP—Revitalized Homeroom Program •Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga: 2010 SEC •Homeroom Guidance Program
  • 5. GC DEFINED • Guidance and Counseling is a helping relationship. • The helping relationship is aimed to meet the needs of the counselee. • It is aimed that the counselee shall assume responsibility for himself, make his own decisions based on alternatives and approaches. • Counselors assist and support counselees so they can come to terms with their problems by exploration, understanding, and constructive action.
  • 6. WHAT IS GUIDANCE? • According to Aquino and Alviar, Guidance tends to help the individual to become adjusted to his present situation so as to provide maximum development for him and to help him plan for his future based on his capabilities and needs. • Crow and Crow give their definition of guidance by stating what guidance is not. According to them, guidance is not giving direction. It is not imposing one’s point of view upon another person. It is not making decisions for the person seeking assistance. It is not carrying the burden of another life. • Guidance is pre-problem.
  • 7. WHAT IS COUNSELING? • According to Dinkmeyer (1996) it is a personal relationship between a counselee and a professionally trained counselor who aims to assist him to communicate and meet his immediate needs and problems. • Blocker (1996) says that it is an interaction process which facilitates meaningful understanding of self and environment. The process results in the establishment and/or clarification of goals and values for future behavior. • Toribio (1976) presents what counseling is not. She said, it is not the giving of advice. It is not forcing beliefs, attitudes, or behavior by persuasion or coercion. It is not assigning or selecting goals or jobs for individuals. Rather, it is providing conditions which facilitate voluntary change. • Counseling is post-problem.
  • 8. WHY MUST THE COUNSELOR NOT BE INVOLVED IN THE ACTUAL ADMINISTRATION AND PUNISHMENT? • It is the function of guidance to help the individual understand why the behavior is unacceptable which results to punishment by some authorities. The counselor should not be involved in the actual administration of punishment of the student, nor work to free him from any punishment like a defense lawyer. This is so because it would be difficult to establish and maintain rapport that is necessary for counseling and guidance.
  • 9. GROUP GC VS INDIVIDUAL GC • Group GC is any group activity in which the primary purpose is to assist each individual in the group to solve his problems and make adjustments. It discusses problems common to a group, develops awareness that problems are also shared by others, broadens the horizons of students with reference to occupational choice available to them. • Individual GC is given to a single person at a time. Ordonez enumerates the most common cases brought to the Guidance Clinic by individuals. They include 1. ambition, 2. choice of school, 3. failing grades, 4. personality maladjustment, 5. choice of a vocation, 6. employment, 7. physical or mental handicap, 8. family problem
  • 10. GUIDANCE SERVICES • 1. INDIVIDUAL INVENTORY—information gathered about each individual in school that can be available for reference, can be used for proper diagnoses, predicting progress and behaviors, accurate placement, and program evaluation. This can include the PDS, anecdotal report, anecdotal record, rating scales, checklists, autobiography, self-expression essay, self-description essay, diaries, questionnaires, structured interviews, disciplinary decision, test results
  • 11. GUIDANCE SERVICES • 2. INFORMATION • “Nobody can make appropriate decisions without pertinent information.” • KINDS: personal-social (How one can improve oneself or relationship with others), academic-educational, vocational-occupational • Major Methods of Dissemination: Printed Material, Small Group Guidance Activity, Homeroom/Classroom Guidance, Seminars/Symposia/Conferences
  • 12. GUIDANCE SERVICES • 3. COUNSELING—academic, vocational, persona;/social, diet, crisis counseling, bereavement, pastoral, leisure counseling, addiction counseling • THE COUNSELING PROCESS: Relationship Building, Assessment and Diagnosis, Formulation of Counseling Goals, Intervention and Problem Solving, Termination and Follow-Up
  • 13. GUIDANCE SERVICES •4. CONSULTATION—allows work with clients to be facilitated •In the school setting, C’lors consult with administrators, teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • 14. GUIDANCE SERVICES • 5. PREVENTION AND WELLNESS • 3 LEVELS of Prevention • Primary (people who are not presently afflicted by the disorder), Secondary (focuses on those who are experiencing early onset), Tertiary (deals with individuals already afflicted by the disorder and are being helped to manage it) • For efficacy, prevention program should be implemented before onset of indicators, targets populations not individuals, consider the uniqueness of the population and their environment. • WELLNESS—counselors should be involved in programs promoting lifestyle change for healthy living
  • 15. GUIDANCE SERVICES •6. REFERRAL—the tapping of agencies, organizations, or individuals that may be of better assistance in the counselee’s resolution of problems and attainment of goals.
  • 16. GUIDANCE SERVICES • 7. PLACEMENT the facilitation of the client’s movement to the appropriate educational/occupational level or program; entry into the appropriate co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, pursuit of further education or other employment upon leaving the institution.
  • 17. GUIDANCE SERVICES •8. FOLLOW-UP •The appraisal of how counselees who have been counseled, placed, or referred or have graduated are doing, to determine whether further assistance is necessary.
