2. Andy Griffith was born on June 1,1926 in Mt. Airy, NC. He grew up in a Baptist family. He went to UNC Chapel Hill and majored in music. After graduating from UNC he taught English before becoming an actor. Andy Griffith started his acting career in the play The Lost Colony. He had many roles in the play before he finally got the lead as Sir Walter Raleigh. Andy Griffith is most famous for his role as Andy Taylor on the Andy Griffith Show. He later started in the TV show Matlock. He is also an accomplish comedian, director, producer and singer. He now lives in California with his wife Cindi Knight. Andy GriffithBy: Spencer Huff

3. BlackbeardBy: Dylan Herndon Blackbeard, or Edward Teach, was the most notorious pirate in the history of seafaring. The sight of Blackbeard was enough to make most of his victims surrender without a fight. Blackbeard was known for taking more than 50 ships during his piracy. He sailed to the sound of Bath which was the capital of NC at the time. Governor Charles Eden granted Blackbeard a pardon for all of his crimes up to this time. In November 1718 Virginia Governor Alexander sent the royal navy to kill Blackbeard in a bloody battle in the Ocracoke inlet. On November 1718 it was reported that Blackbeard took five musket balls and more than twenty sword lacerations before he fell to his death in this battle. Black Beards death is known to have ended piracy in the new world.

4. CardinalBy: Garrett Wrenn The Cardinal is sometimes called the Winter Redbird because it is most noticeable during the winter when it is the only redbird present. A year-round resident of North Carolina, the Cardinal is one of the most common bird in our gardens, meadows and woodlands. The male Cardinal is red all over, except for the area of its throat and region around its bill, which is black. The female is less colorful with the red confined to the crest, wings, and tail. The Cardinal is a fine singer, and what is unusual is that the female sings as beautifully as the male. The male generally defines the art of song in the bird world. The Cardinal was selected by popular choice as our state bird on March 4,1943.

5. Dolley MadisonBy: Justin Crabtree Dolley Madison was born on May 20, 1768 in Guilford County. She died July 12, 1847. Her parents were Mary Cole and John Payne. She was first married to John Todd. They had two boys named John and William. In 1793, the yellow fever struck and she lost her husband and her youngest son William. On September 15, 1974 she married James Madison. Dolley Madison became the official First lady. When the British army approached Washington during the war of 1812, Madison’s slaves collected valuables like silver, Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait of George Washington, an original draft of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. In 1837, Dolley was a living celebrity. Some called her “Fashion Celebrity of the 1800’s”.

6. Enos SlaughterBy: Michael Thaxton EnosBradsherSlaugther was an American Major League Baseball right fielder. He had a 19 year baseball career. He played from 1938-1942 and 1946-1959 for four different teams . He played with the St. Louis Cardinals. Enos Slaughter was born in my home town of Roxboro, North Carolina and joined the Cardinals in 1938 and he was then traded to the New York Yankees in 1954. He batted left handed and threw right. He known for a smooth, flat swing that made him a reliable ‘’contact hitter. He played 19 seasons with the Cardinals, Yankees, Kansas city Athletics, and Milwaukee Braves. He was a 10 time All star and he played in 5 World Series. He was nicknamed ‘’Country” In 1943 he served in the military during WW II. He was put into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983 and his Cardinals jersey was retired in 1996 and a statue was made of him in 1999.

7. Fort BraggBy: Nathan Dunn Fort Bragg is a major United states Army installation, in Cumberland and Hoke counties, North Carolina, U.S., mostly in Fayetteville but also partly in the town Spring Lake. The fort is named for Confederate General Braxton Bragg. It covers over 251 square miles (650 km) in four counties. It is best known as the home of the US Army Airborne Forces and Special forces. Fort Bragg is home of the airborne. For more than half a century, Fort Bragg has a proud heritage as the home of nations finest fighting forces. It is also known for the home of the 82nd airborne, JFK Special Warfare School, and the Delta Force.

8. Grandfather MountainBy: Erica Colasieno Grandfather mountain is a mountain and state park near Linville, NC. At 5’946 feet, it is the highest peak on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains and one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains. Until 2008, Grandfather Mountains was privately owned and used as a tourist attraction. It was and still is best known for its mile-high swinging bridge, the highest in America, built in 1952 by Hugh Morton and William B. Umstead. The bridge links two of the mountains’ rock peaks, and is known as the swinging bridge due to its tendency to sway in high winds. Morton inherited the mountains from his grandfather. He died on June 1,2006 at the age of 85. After Morton’s death, he donated all of his photographs, including many of Grandfather mountains, Mildred the bear and many other aspects of life on the Mountain, to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. On September29, 2008, North Carolina Governor Mike Easley announced that the state had agreed to purchase 2,600 acres of land of Grandfather Mountains from the Morton family for $12 million. The area will eventually be added to the North Carolina State Park system, becoming the 34th North Carolina State Park. The family will continue to operate the nature park as a tourist attraction for Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation. In this mountain, not only is it known for its beauty, animals that are endangered and non-endangered are living freely on this mountain. Everyone should have a chance to see the Grandfather Mountain.

9. Hollerin’ Contestby: McKayla Chambers The Hollerin’ Contest is a national contest. On the first year of the Hollerin’ Contest around 5,000 people showed up. When it first started it was held every June. Basically what the contestants do is holler, but not just in any way! It is located on Spivey’s Corner N.C. I would love to watch a contest someday! It sounds awesome!

10. Indians of North CarolinaBy: Allie Barker Indians in North Carolina hunted, gardened and fished to get their food. But when they fished, they used weirs or used spears. To cook their food they would lay it in a bowl made of clay. They did not live in tepees. They lived in small houses made of mud and wood. The Indians wore cloths made of deer and other animal skin. It took many days to prepare the skin to be sewn. Indians most of the time used canoes for going places. North Carolina has the largest Indian population east of the Mississippi river. More than 80,000 Indians live in North Carolina today we now call them Native Americans.

11. James K. PolkBy: McKayla Chambers James K. Polk was the second President from N.C. He was born in 1895 near Pineville. One achievement he had was getting more land from the west for the United States of America. President Polk also served seven terms in the House of Representatives. Polk was the 11th President from 1845-1849. He was 50 years old when he was elected as president.

12. Kill Devil HillsBy: Kaitlyn Briggs K is for Kill Devil Hills. That is were the Wright Brothers flew there plane. Kill Devil Hills has been a city since 1953. There is a memorial there honoring the Wright Brothers. We all knew who the Wright Brothers are. They are the ones who flew the plane around Kill Devil Hills. They were very famous. Kill Devil Hills is famous to and if you go to the Outer Banks were the memorial is, you can see a metal plane and it has a metal Wright Brother statue in the plane. and another metal Wright Brother running to get on the plane. The Wright brothers have died. They died in 1935. We will always remember them.

13. Lexington BBQ FestivalBy: Allie Barker The idea for Lexington Barbeque festival was made by Joe Sink Jr.. He had no Idea it would be so popular. The lady in the picture is Kay Saintsing. She produced the first festival. In 1984 30,000 people came to the Lexington barbeque festival. In 2003 there was over 150,000 people at the Lexington barbeque festival. They had to close the streets. There are over 400 exhibits. This will be its 28 year running. People in Lexington , Davidson County, People from all over North Carolina, and barbeque restaurants. People in Lexington call October Barbeque month. Events are held all month. It will be held Saturday, October 22 this year.

14. Mount MitchellBy: Taylor Yarborough Mount Mitchell is named after Elisha Mitchell. The height is 6,684 feet. The highest point east of the Mississippi. Located in a 1,855-acre North Carolina, State Park,35 miles northeast of downtown Asheville. Mount Mitchell is part of Black mountain range. You can go camping at Mount Mitchell, hiking and there are trails. The weather is usually 10-30 degrees. If you go to hiking you have to hike a lot.

15. Nantahala River RaftingBy: JailynMattos The Nantahala river rafting trip is an exciting event that the family can take. The Nantahala River is located in Nantahala National Park, North Carolina. The river offers eight miles of white water rafting fun. The trip takes over 3 miles. The river is damn controlled so that you can expect for the river to have good rapids all year long. Most people take an inflatable raft or a kayak down the river.

16. Ocracoke IslandBy: Dylan Herndon Ocracoke Island is part of the outer banks of North Carolina It is one of the most remote islands on the outer banks. Ocracoke Island can only be reached by three types of transportation – ferry, private boat, or airplane. The island is also home to the Ocracoke Lighthouse which has remained in operation since 1823. Ocracoke Island is also home to a British cemetery. During World War II, German submarines sank several British ships and the bodies of the British sailors were washed ashore and buried in a cemetery on the island. A British flag flies at the cemetery at all times.

17. Mt. Olive PicklesBy: Justin Crabtree Mt.Olive Pickle company was founded by Shickery Baddour and George Moore. They had an idea to save wasted cucumbers from local farmers gardens. They would buy the cucumbers and brine them and then sell them to other pickling companies. Their plan did not work as they thought. In 1926 some Mt.Olive business owners put in a new plan to pack and sell their own pickles. In 1986,Mt.Olive founded the NC Pickle Festival. On December 31, 1999, Mt.Olive held the first New Year’s Eve Pickle drop at 7pm. Mt.Olive is the top selling pickle company in the southeastern USA and it is the second best selling in the USA.

18. Quilt FestivalBy: JailynMattos The antique quilt show located in Manteo, North Carolina is a beautiful display of over 100 new and old quilts. Admission and parking to the event is free. This year’s event was held February 27th to March 227th. The theme for this year is story telling.

19. Sir Walter RaleighBy: Paige Carver Sir Walter Raleigh sent out an expedition in 1584 under Philip Amandas and Arthur Barlowe. They first touched the North Carolina coast around the vicinity of Hatteras. Once Sir Walter Raleigh heard the good news about land of plenty and friendly Indians Sir Walter Raleigh headed out in April of 1585. They made land fall near Ocracoke Inlet.

20. Great Smokey MountainsBy: CailinVictoriano If you go to the trains station in Dillsboro & Bryson City you could see the Great Smokey Mountains! The mountains are blooming with lots of pretty flowers. There are lots of cool things to do by the Smokies! You could go hiking, biking, or motorcycle riding. There are also train rides, great food,& beautiful log cabins waiting for you to come & stay for a while!

21. Tweetsie RailroadBy: Payton Gentry Tweetsie Railroad is a Wild West theme park that is located between Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina. It is open each year from May through October. This park opened on July 4, 1957. There are lots of fun things to do at Tweetsie. I would know, my girl scout troop went to Tweetsie last summer. Kids can be a cowboy, Indian or an engine! Let me tell you about some of the things to do at Tweetsie. There is the very famous steam engine ride. On this ride, you get to take a 3 mile ride on the historic steam engine number 12, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Watch out on the ride, the train robbers may make their way on your train and rob you on your ride. You will also see cowboys and renegades stirring up trouble. Other things to do are to visit the Country Fair and Miner’s Mountain. At Country Fair, there are lots of rides for kids. Some of them are Drop Tower ride, Round Up, Tornado Spinning Ride, the Carousel, Tilt-A-Whirl, the Ferris Wheel and many more. There are several rides for small children also. We rode the exciting chairlift up to Miners Mountain! That was very fun! While at Miners Mountain, my mom and sister did gem mining and panning for gold. They both enjoyed getting different stones out of the sand while I rode the Tilt-a-Whirl about 10 times! Also on Miner’s Mountain, there is a place called Deer Park. We fed the deer some corn and got to see several other animals. As you can see, there is lots of fun to be had at Tweetsie Railroad!

22. USS North Carolina BattleshipBy: Logan Bates USS North Carolina (BB-55) (Showboat) was the lead ship of her class of battleship and the fourth in the United States Navy to be named in honor of this U.S. state. She was the first new-construction U.S. battleship to enter service during the World War 2, participating in every major naval offensive in the Pacific theater to become the most decorated U.S. battleship of the war with 15 battle stars. [2] She is now a museum ship at the port of Wilmington, North Carolina. She was laid down on 27 October 1937at the New York Navel Shipyard and launched on 13 June 1940, sponsored by the young daughter of Clyde R. Huey, Governor of North Carolina. The ship was commissioned in New York City on 9 April 1941 with Captain Olaf M. Hustvedt first in command. The first commissioned of the navy’s fast, heavily-armed battleships with 16 in (410 mm) guns, North Carolina received so much attention during her fitting-out and trials that she won the enduring nickname “Show-boat”.

23. Victory JunctionBy: Dalton O’Brien Victory Junction opened in 2004 and have made more than 11,000 children happy. The cost of this camp to send 1 child is $2,500, but none of the families have to pay. It’s covered by people donating money. Victory Junction is a camp for 24 chronic medical conditions. The camp is located in Randleman, NC and is on 84 acres that was donated by Richard and Linda Petty. Kids who attend the camp have to be 4 years into active treatments. They only take kids 6-16. They have lots of activities for them to do - swimming, horses, ball, and bow & arrow shooting, parties, fishing, etc.

24. Willow Oak Music ParkBy: Payton Gentry Willow Oak Music Park is a beautiful park located just a few minutes from my house. At Willow Oak, we enjoy bluegrass music and lots of fun with family and friends. This is an event that my family enjoys every year. This year’s vent will be held on April 21 – 23. While at the park, my family loves to listen to music while I mostly love to play with my friends and walk around the campground. It is a wonderful family atmosphere that we really enjoy.

25. XVIII Airborne Corps.By: Garrett Wrenn XVIII Airborne Corps is corps of United States Army set up for rapid deployment any where in the world. It is commonly referred to as “America’s Contingency Corps” and is the Army’s largest war fighting organization. As of 2004 the XVIII Airborne Corps consisted of approximately 88,000 soldiers in four divisions. Its headquarters are located in Fort Bragg, NC.

26. Barlett YanceyBy: Paige Carver Barlett Yancey was born February 19, 1785. Barlett Yancey became a lawyer after studying under Archibald O. Murphy. Received his license & opened a law office in Caswell County. He ran Congress and defeated his former teacher, Murphy, for the seat in 1813. While serving in Congress Yancey was unanimously elected speaker of the senate and held that position until the end of his legislative service. After serving two years in Congress, he went back to working law. It is said that Yanceyville was name in his honor.

27. Asheville ZooBy: Beyounce’ Brooks There is a zoo in Asheville, North Carolina. The Asheville Zoo is home to approximately 1,100 individual specimens representing more than 200 species. Each year the zoo calendar is filled with event that may feature games, face painting, live entertainment or special education information. Visitors are treated to these activities in addition to all of the artwork, animals, and landscaping. Some of the exhibits that are re there are: the Forest Edge, Wantani Grassland, and the African pavilion.
