Scope varies • Scopes should be as wide as possible and include extraction of raw materials to disposal, such as recycling, composting, landfills, and waste-to-energy incineration Why LCAs from ISO Standards can be different • Narrowly defined LCA Scopes are inherently biased • End-of-Life • Recycling since then the scope provides only an isolated view of the environmental impact of recyclable versus nonrecyclable packaging • Assesses only polymerization to recycling • Impact of bio-derived versus fossil-derived polyethylene is not determined • Wal-Mart scorecard does not include how factories derive power

Inventory assessment varies • Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database selection sources, such as Ecoinvent Plastics Europe, American Chemistry Council (ACC), US LCI, vary, can be biased and are augmented • Limited data sources yield inaccurate information • Lack of specificity • Many do not have data on difference between cast, blown film and blow-molded or injection molding processes • Many do not have film data on metallization process • Lack of location specificity • The impact of aluminum depends on origin of bauxite • Data and sources in supply chain change Why LCAs from ISO Standards can be different
