  2. 2. What is it? <ul><li>Condition in which the skin becomes inflamed when areas of skin have been exposed to radiation, such as x-rays, sunlight, or atomic particle radiation </li></ul>
  3. 3. Cause of Illness <ul><li>The cause is not known
  4. 4. Suspected that the body's defense system overreacts to substances within the skin that are made 'allergic' by UV light
  5. 5. No evidence that this condition is genetic </li></ul>
  6. 6. Signs and Symptoms <ul><li>All areas exposed to the sun, with the face, neck, upper chest in a V distribution and backs of hands are most commonly affected
  7. 7. The lesions are usually red and inflamed with scaling and lichenification
  8. 8. Itchy and may spread to other areas of the body where the skin is covered by clothing </li></ul>

  13. 13. Diagnosis <ul><li>Phototesting

  16. 16. Topical steroid creams/ointments
  17. 17. Emollients and moisturizers
  18. 18. Oral immune suppressive treatments </li></ul>
  19. 19. Interesting Facts <ul><li>The condition may spontaneously resolve, sometimes many years after the onset of the disease.
  20. 20. Mainly affects men over the age of 50 years
  21. 21. It occurs mostly in people who are allergic to sensitizers, such as, flowers, types of wood, perfumes, sunscreens and rubber compounds
  22. 22. Some patients may react to artificial light sources such as naked fluorescent lamps </li></ul>
  23. 23. Preventative Measures <ul><li>Avoid direct exposure to sunlight
  24. 24. Avoid direct exposure to ultraviolet sources
  25. 25. Use protective plastic film on home and car windows
  26. 26. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen </li></ul>
