• Good Morning…As the Director of the PaSDC and member of Governor’s Advisory Panel for Census 2010, I have one important question to ask you. Have you filled out and returned your Census form? It’s my pleasure to be here this morning to share with you some information about the Institute of State and Regional Affairs and it’s applied research centers
• For over 37 years, the Institute provides strategic applied research and information services to individuals, organizations and businesses. We use: - the latest available technologies and -employ academically rigorous social science techniques in conducting our sponsored projects and services. We pride ourselves on being customer driven and cost effective.
• The Institute and it’s affiliated applied research centers are located in Church Hall. Part of the Penn State Harrisburg campus that the Chancellor is developing as an Entrepreneurial Development Complex
• The Institute is a collect of applied research centers that specialize in:Demographic analysis and services,Economic development training,Survey research,Geographic Information Systems, and Information TechnologyJoining us today from the Institute are: Brady Stroh and Steph Wehnau (We No)While we are separate centers we work together on many projects.A more detailed description of each of the centers is included in packet.Let give an example of each of the Centers areas of expertise
• For example our demographic expertise led us to work with the PA Department of Publica Welfare and the PA Department of Aging on one of our largest applied research projects. The $1.6 million project was to help them understand what the potential long term care needs looked like in Pennsylvania in the future. What is the possible number of people they might need to serve as well as the fiscal impact to provide service to those people.Population projections are also extremely valuable to Business and Industry in planning their marketing and product development activities. For example, we are currently working with UGI to help them understand their market penetration as it relates to home heating sources. The demographic data we will be providing them is a critical piece in their strategy to develop new markets. One of most popular services to businesses is our extensive collection of publications detailing a variety of demographic characteristic on local areas. A packet detailing all of those products and service have been provided. Note: use if question on 10 year old data:I also want to mention that the rich socio-economic data we all need for planning purposes will be available at all geographic levels every year, starting in December. The Census Bureau understands the need for strategic information on a yearly basis and has thrown away the Decennial Long form sample survey and replaced it with the American Community Survey. The sample data is collected on an ongoing basis and provide the data we need in a more timely manner.
• For over 24 years, the college has sponsored the PA BEDC which is one of 19 internationally accredited courses leading to an Economic Developer certification. Roughly 45 business and industry representative attend the week long course each year.
• Our Information Technology works with interactive databases and existing internet based technologies to deliver strategic services to our clients. The PA Dept of Transportation and Cheney University (a historically black college and university) came to US to assist them in developing the technical resources needed to support the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Supportive Services program which they manage. Their need was to develop an interactive web application. The interactive google map application is used to help majority contractors locate minority contractors who they can then partner with on PA highway construction projects.
• Since 1987, the PaSDC has served the legislature, executive branch policy offices and the media through our satellite office in the Capitol Complex. Some of our strategic activities including hands on census training, exhibits in capitol rotunda, briefings to newly elected legislators, data requests from legislators, and numerous news releases to local, statewide and national media outlets. It is not unusual for us to get a call from a Representative from the House floor asking us a demographic question. A recent research brief on the latest population estimates is in your packet.
• ISRA works closely with faculty and students from PSH, Hershey, University Park, other Universities and organizations.
• That’s a brief overview of the Institute.Much of our applied research activity is repeat business. Over the years we have developed strategic partnerships with many of the PA state agencies. Many of these are described in a handout included in your packet. One such example is the Institute’s current work assisting the Center for Workforce Information and Analysis at L & I to guide the collection, analysis and dissemination of the real-time labor market data for green job creation.
• With us this morning is…. Sue Mukherjee, Director of the Center for Workforce Information and AnalysisSue’s current passion and focus is the Greening of the Pennsylvania economy. We are working to assist her in this effort through providing technical assistance in planning, data collection and analysis of data and strategic information. Sue has agreed to share some thoughts about her work and our working relationship.
• Time: Erin – 5 minutes.
