My History <ul><li>Worked part-time at weekends at a dairy laboratory throughout University life. </li></ul><ul><li>Graduated from University of Leicester in 2003 with a 2.1 in BSc Medical Genetics </li></ul><ul><li>Left the University of Leicester in 2005 with an MSc in Bioinformatics </li></ul><ul><li>Looked for lab work in the field of genetics </li></ul><ul><li>Temped in an office for a while </li></ul><ul><li>Offered a permanent full time job at the dairy laboratory </li></ul><ul><li>Promoted from within. </li></ul>

The Dairy <ul><li>Arla Foods is one of the UKs largest dairy companies </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Cravendale </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Anchor </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Apetina </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>The site at Ashby produces milk for supermarkets, bulk cream and Shake & Sundae for McDonalds restaurants </li></ul>

The Laboratory <ul><li>24 / 7 / 365 operation </li></ul><ul><li>Use rapid chemistry testing methods to determine fat and water content of milk </li></ul><ul><li>Use microbiology testing methods to determine bacteria levels in milk </li></ul><ul><li>Measure food safety and quality </li></ul><ul><li>Must ensure accurate results are reported. </li></ul>

My Role – Technical Team Leader <ul><li>Run the laboratory and ensure results are reported accurately and timely </li></ul><ul><li>Achieve accreditation for the lab </li></ul><ul><li>Laboratory and Site customer audits </li></ul><ul><li>Report to Technical Manager on site </li></ul><ul><li>Manage the departmental staff </li></ul><ul><li>Deputise for Technical Manager </li></ul>

Learnings from my Promotion <ul><li>It is possible to start at the bottom and work up quite quickly </li></ul><ul><li>It is possible to be promoted several positions at once </li></ul><ul><li>Interviewers can see potential in someone – need to show them this! </li></ul><ul><li>Doing tasks in addition to your current role never hurts </li></ul><ul><li>Having a degree in a related (or any) subject can help you in future if it isn’t required at present. </li></ul>

Learnings since my Promotion <ul><li>Management can give job satisfaction </li></ul><ul><li>Respect is earned by starting at the bottom </li></ul><ul><li>Play to your strengths </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Lab database </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>IT champion </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Training </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Skills are transferable </li></ul><ul><li>Although not a chosen career path – I LOVE MY JOB!! </li></ul>
