Progress of ecology: PechaKucha for teaching

  1. 1. changes are a natural part of systems including science @cjlortie
  2. 2. criticism of ecology has been profound application, practice, statistics, interdisciplinary connections

  4. 4. society often demands conclusive answers & scientific debate is confused for lack of understanding mistake. need balance.
  5. 5. ‘it depends’ or context are common answers in ecology get outside
  6. 6. theory a system of ideas intended to explain something based on general independent principles
  7. 7. truth & stories are not dichotomies need a narrative, purpose, & hypothesis to ‘test’
  8. 8. progress best measured not only by answers but by questions & inspiration
  9. 9. data vs theory is the same continuum of ideas in different forms sadly, there is still a ‘centrifugal force’ (Weiner 1995) sometimes keeping data & theory apart
  10. 10. solutions: principled data collaboration open science within a discipline there are necessarily many subjects
  11. 11. principled data = fundamental evidence associated with a chain of reasoning
  12. 12. Open science is the movement to make scientific research, data and dissemination accessible to all levels of an inquiring society. process not just papers
  13. 13. eeb & Cadotte collaboration is critical
  14. 14. collective solutions lead to synthesis & integration
  15. 15. Ecology is the patterns & effective processes in the abundance, distribution, & diversity of organisms. effective processes = interactions Aarssen 1997
  16. 16. practical ecology the interpretation of these patterns & interactions using any approach that generates inspiration modern synthesis
  17. 17. pluralism a condition or system in which two or more states, groups, principles, coexist.

  19. 19. creative, critical ecology skills
