Talk at Intecol 2013 special symposium: The diversity of diversity studies: retrospectives and future directions.
Biodiversity ecosystem function studies primarily focus on plants. Patterns in insect diversity can also be important drivers of function and more importantly can also be drivers of community dynamics in general. Insects are nonetheless inextricably linked to plants for resources, shelter, and substrate for interactions. Here, impacts of plant invasion on insect diversity patterns are examined, plant facilitation impacts on insect community dynamics contrasted, and more broadly, the importance of plant diversity patterns versus plant-plant strengths is contrasted as drivers of insect diversity patterns.
