What is RISK ASSESSMENT? <ul><li>A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. RISK ASSESSMENT cont… <ul><li>When thinking about your risk assessment, remember: </li></ul><ul><li>a hazard is anything that may cause harm, such as spills, electricity, working from ladders, balls on the court etc; </li></ul><ul><li>the risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody could be harmed by these and other hazards, together with an indication of how serious the harm could be. </li></ul><ul><li>Group task: 5 mins </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Identify some of the risks & hazards you could encounter in a basketball coaching context. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>What might you do to reduce these risks? </li></ul></ul>

  16. 16. Forms of abuse <ul><li>Emotional abuse </li></ul><ul><li>this could be due to a persistent lack of love and affection and in the sports situation might occur when the child is subjected to unrealistic pressure or is bullied in order to consistently perform to high expectations. </li></ul>

Indications of abuse <ul><li>Indications that a child is being abused could include:– </li></ul><ul><li>An injury for which the explanation seems inconsistent. </li></ul><ul><li>The child describes what appears to be an abusive act involving him/her. </li></ul><ul><li>Unexplained changes in behaviour – e.g. Becoming quiet, withdrawn or displaying sudden outbursts of temper. </li></ul><ul><li>Inappropriate sexual awareness. </li></ul><ul><li>Unexplained and suspicious injuries. </li></ul>

Reporting Abuse <ul><li>React calmly so as not to frighten the child. </li></ul><ul><li>Tell the child they are not to blame and that they are right to tell. </li></ul><ul><li>Take what the child says seriously. </li></ul><ul><li>Keep questions to an absolute minimum. </li></ul><ul><li>Reassure the child. </li></ul><ul><li>Make a full record of what has been said. </li></ul>

Policy <ul><li>There should be a child protection policy in place where you carry out your work </li></ul><ul><li>Be familiar with the policy </li></ul><ul><li>Raise awareness about safeguarding & protecting </li></ul><ul><li>Good intentions and bad practice </li></ul><ul><li>The Child is at the centre of child protection, but it also protects the coach </li></ul><ul><li>Seek advice & extra training </li></ul><ul><li>All matters of concern should be disclosed to the Chief Executive of your Home Country Basketball Governing Body. </li></ul>

Psychological & Physical Load <ul><li>Too much physical load and you risk overloading your pupils, injury and lack of enjoyment; too little physical load and you will rob the performer from developing the necessary agility, balance, coordination and speed (ABCs) required to enjoy all physical activities. </li></ul><ul><li>Characteristics of physical load: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Improve physical condition of players </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Help players better assimilate techniques and tactics </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Avoid fatigue and burnout </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Help players perform better during games </li></ul></ul>

Psychological & Physical Load <ul><li>By the same principle too much psychological load can lead to confusion and mental fatigue; too little psychological load will prevent players from learning how to deal with stressful situations, problem solving and therefore may cause boredom and lack of commitment. </li></ul><ul><li>Characteristics of psychological load: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Improve players commitment to their sport </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Novelty, variety and complexity </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Stressful competitive situations </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Opportunities to evaluate performance </li></ul></ul>
