  1. 1. Gladiators By Yarden Cohen
  2. 2. Who are gladiators? Gladiators are slaves that are forced to fight in arenas.
  3. 3. What did they do  They trained in school.  They fought against whoever was in front of them.  And could also receive prizes.
  4. 4. Were they fought  In 80 A.D. the games began in the Colosseum, the blood bath of Rome.  The first recorded gladiator games were in 264 B.C.
  5. 5. Where do they come from  Gladiators are / were:  War prisoners  Slaves  Rome’s prisoners
  6. 6. The most populer types of gladiators  Samnite-A gladiator that was armed with a short sword, rectangular shield, and a helmet.  Retiarius (net fighter)-A type of Gladiator that was trained to throw a net on his opponent and then put a trident in them.  Thracian-This is a Gladiator that was armed in Thracian style, with a rectangular shield called a Parmula and sword that had a slightly curved short blade called called the Sica.
  7. 7. The schools  The schools are where you trained to be a gladiator.  When they tell you what your going to be, it determines everything. If you a Retiarius you were a dead man; if you a Samnite you had a chance.  The people that are training next to to you in line are fighting beside you one round but the next round they’re slaughtering you.
  8. 8. Fascinating facts  Women once fought as gladiators and then that was banned in A.D. 200  Gladiators when in training didn’t even have real weapons to train with -- everything was made out of wood.
  9. 9. In the arena  The biggest, largest game ever was held by emperor Trajan in A.D. 107. He killed over 10,000 animals and 10,000 gladiators and it took place in the Colosseum.  If you were a great fighter you would be rewarded with a wooden baton.  At this point only the most spontaneous, skilled gladiators could earn their freedom.  The most fights ever won in Rome was by Publius Ostorius, he won 51 fights.
