How was this test applied?
This test was applied to different University
teachers, on August 19th, and it consisted on
the following slides showing an
hypothetical lab that would be sponsored,
with some information on the problem and
ideas about layout and photos of existing
labs, in order to get their feedback on how
they think this could help (or not) on
increasing the student’s interest in class and
reducing a bit the distance between school
and work.
How was this test applied? #2
At the end of the slides there was a feedback
grid that could be used for the teachers to
send their feedback.
The presentation was sent through e-mail
and facebook messages, and the portuguese
version was uploaded to slideshare in order
to make things easier.
Teacher’s Dilemma:
How to make classes
+ interesting and
+ effective in order to
grab student’s interest
and prepare them to the
school-to-work
transition

Get local sponsor for a lab
The lab would allow the birth, testing
and development of many other ideas
(including the software development
such as apps and games, new product
prototyping, the birth and growth of
startups, and new business models.
Why?
Students:
Would see the link between University
and career,
Would be stimulated by real
examples,
Would have a “hands on” learning
allied to theory,
Would be eager to learn more.
Why?
Companies
Strong impact on their image as
innovators and great places to work,
Increase on the quality of their future
recruitment process, due to a closer
contact to the students,
Therefore, would be eager to sponsor

Final notes
It seems the prototype was still too far from
their reality, that the model should be better
described and we should try to get more
tangible such as bringing to an actual class the
method with post its to check if they work ok
with this or make a prototyping session in
some group to see how it evolves. This could
bring more useful feedback .
A second phase should also include tests with
other stakeholders (students, employers,
potential sponsors).

Prototyping

  • 3. How was this test applied? This test was applied to different University teachers, on August 19th, and it consisted on the following slides showing an hypothetical lab that would be sponsored, with some information on the problem and ideas about layout and photos of existing labs, in order to get their feedback on how they think this could help (or not) on increasing the student’s interest in class and reducing a bit the distance between school and work.
  • 4. How was this test applied? #2 At the end of the slides there was a feedback grid that could be used for the teachers to send their feedback. The presentation was sent through e-mail and facebook messages, and the portuguese version was uploaded to slideshare in order to make things easier.
  • 5. Teacher’s Dilemma: How to make classes + interesting and + effective in order to grab student’s interest and prepare them to the school-to-work transition
  • 6. Selected PrEtotype + disruptive idea from ideation phase: Get local sponsor for a lab The lab would allow the birth, testing and development of many other ideas (including the software development such as apps and games, new product prototyping, the birth and growth of startups, and new business models.
  • 7. Why? Students: Would see the link between University and career, Would be stimulated by real examples, Would have a “hands on” learning allied to theory, Would be eager to learn more.
  • 8. Why? Companies Strong impact on their image as innovators and great places to work, Increase on the quality of their future recruitment process, due to a closer contact to the students, Therefore, would be eager to sponsor

  • 15. Would a lab like this help you facing your challenges as a teacher? Questionnaire presented to the stakeholders: What did you like most? What you did not understand? What needs to be reviewed on this sponsored lab idea? Do you have any new ideas or comments to consider? Do you also face problems while trying to engage your students to your classes?
  • 16. What I liked most... What should be reviewed What I did not understand New ideas to consider Feedback Received #1 How exactly is it going to work? Can I reserve a project room for my entire class or each group has a room? Will they be open? Can I teach at the lab or is it only for their practical activities? The idea of having a space where my students can have more practical activities related to my subject. How will the space be divided among all the courses and how will this improve the contact with industry needs? Nice idea, but where’s the actual connection to the work market?

Prototyping Room, because at the University they usually don’t have the chance to get more tangible when it comes to new products Is there a definition of what kind of project can have a place at the lab?

  • 19. Final notes It seems the prototype was still too far from their reality, that the model should be better described and we should try to get more tangible such as bringing to an actual class the method with post its to check if they work ok with this or make a prototyping session in some group to see how it evolves. This could bring more useful feedback . A second phase should also include tests with other stakeholders (students, employers, potential sponsors).
