Introduction A respected immigration attorney with more than 25 years of experience in the field, Christopher Stender works with clients at Federal Immigration Counselors, AZ, in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to his work as an immigration attorney, Christopher Stender is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). In early April, the U.S. Government announced that applications for H- 1B visas were down by nearly 9,000 from the previous year. AILA president Annaluisa Padilla says that the country is missing out on vital talent by going with a lottery system for issuing these visas, and also by capping the issuance at such a low number.

H-1B She says the talent that comes in each year for businesses across the country through the H-1B program is desperately needed to help keep American companies competitive in the global market. Both Padilla and AILA Executive Director, Benjamin Johnson, say that companies are now getting out of the H-1B process altogether amid the growing uncertainty, effectively creating a wall between them and the skilled workers who have the specialized training needed to help their companies grow.
