Camille - All About Thermometers

 1. 1. All About Thermometers By Camille Marcon
 2. 2. Different Types of Thermometers

Alcohol Thermometers

Mercury-in-glass Thermometers

Medical or Digital Thermometers

Pill Thermometer

Galileo Thermometer

Infrared Thermometer

These are only a few of many different types of thermometers, but I will be focusing on the first three in my presentation.

 3. 3. How Alcohol thermometers operate…

The Alcohol Thermometer, also known as the spirit thermometer, is used in many ways.

There is an organic liquid that is contained in a glass bulb which is connected to a capillary, wall which a one layer metal insulator that’s really thin so that gasses and molecules can pass through them, is in the same glass and the end is sealed with an expansion bulb.

The space above the liquid is filled with nitrogen and the vapor from the liquid.

In the working temperature range the space in between the two surfaces and the liquid, lies that capillary.

As the temperature increases, the volume of the liquid expands and moves up the capillary. This happens when heat is applied to the tip of the thermometer.

 4. 4. What Liquids are used…

The liquid in an alcohol thermometer, usually depends on the manufacturer.

Some liquids used are, ethanol, toluene, kerosene, or Isoamyl acetate .

Since most of the liquids are transparent, they are made visible by adding red or blue dye .

Kerosene Toluene Isoamyl acetate Ethanol
 5. 5. Mercury-in-glass Thermometers

Invented by German physics by the name of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit.

These thermometers work very similarly to the alcohol thermometers.

The mercury is in a glass tube, and when heat is applied the mercury rises.

There are numbers on the outside of the tube to make it possible to read the temperature level.

Mercury-In-Glass Thermometer
 6. 6. Medical or Digital Thermometers

Digital or medical Thermometers are used to measure body heat mostly.

These types of thermometers do not contain a liquid inside that indicates when the temperature rises.

Instead, a thermistor is installed inside the thermometer

A thermistor is a device that is powered by electricity and is trigered from an outside source.

When the tip of the thermometer is heated, it switches from an insulator to a conductor of electricity depending on how hot it is.

One type of Thermistor
