Beginning in early February, rebels opposed to the government in Libya are fighting to end Muammar Gaddafi’s autocratic rule.<br />Gaddafi has responded with military force and other measures such as censorship and recruiting mercenaries to bolster his troops.<br />Gaddafi has tried to communicate with opposition leaders through a representative but the rebels have pledged to fight at all costs until Gadhafi surrenders.<br />The rebels have formed a coalition called the Transitional National Council based in Benghazi, a city located east of the Tripoli, the capital of Libya.<br />The Conflict in Libya<br />

Also referred to as Colonel Gaddafi, he has been the leader of Libya since a military coup on September 1, 1969.<br />Gaddafi’s political committees resembled communist parties.<br />The use of censorship, arbitrary detention, jailings, disappearances, torture.<br />Libya was the most censored country in the middle east under Gaddafi’s rule.<br />Corruption - Much of the country's income from oil, which soared in the 1970s, was spent on arms purchases and on sponsoring the military.<br />Who is Muammar Gadhafi?<br />

In early February 2011, major political protests broke out in Libya against Gaddafi's government and quickly turned into a general uprising. <br />High unemployment and demands for freedom have also fueled the protests.<br />From March 6 to March 15, Gaddafi’s regime lands a counteroffensive and advances towards Benghazi.<br />March 19 – UN intervention as it passes a resolution to impose a no fly zone in Libya<br />March 20 – British jets attack Gaddafi<br />March 22 – The US fires 161 cruise missiles in to Libya<br />March 28 – The rebels retreat, pulling out from major cities such RasLanulf and Brega<br />The Conflict<br />
