My name is Chris and I am Head of Customer Success at Covve – I’m here alongside Alex, Covve’s Co-founder – we deal with address books day in day out and we are happy to share some the top tips through these webinars

    So we covered the 5 steps to a tidy address book, and the recording is available in case you missed it

    This webinar will cover what a modern address book can do today – things you don’t normally associate with an address book

    Just a reminder that after the webinar we will be sharing all the material and the recording for future reference
    We are keeping it brief on purpose – we know you guys are super busy

    So what are the things that an address book does today… and why are they important?
  • Firstly what is a modern address book? – mainly refers to apps that take the address book to the next level… so we are talking about dedicated solutions that do a lot more than the average smartphone address book…

    Here’s some of the best address book features you should be using… but the main question is why? Why do we need all this stuff?
    At the very basic level, because we want to always want to have the latest info for our contacts
    We want to get context and insights out of contacts
    Need to keep relationships warm
    Keep track of past communications

    And most importantly because these features combined improve our contact management, networking and business development!

    I could have on the list auto-contact improvement – removing duplicates etc. but we covered those in the previous webinar…
  • First let me share a comparison table… that may come in handy when deciding what address book to use

    You can see here a long list of features and how different solutions fare up… won’t spend much time on this but you can refer to it anytime!

    Just a quick poll to see which of these apps you are using:
    Which are you using?
    Great – nice mix there… keeping everybody happy and a good point to show that each solution has some strong points.
  • So let’s start right away – with the smart interface…
    You’ll notice that in each section we include the apps that offer the specific feature
  • It’s no use having multiple features if you cant use them… Fitting all the features in an app or in a few screens is both art and science...
    Things like calling from the app, grouping contacts, quick access shortcuts, visuals,
    all bring out the hidden value in these address books

    And lately things like swipe or long press on recent iPhones opens up a series of opportunities. So look for a user friendly and smart interface when choosing an address book

    Just a warning… it may take you some practice to change habits and work through an app… but it’s addictive once you get there!
  • Now possibly the best feature of them all!!

    Auto-update… anything with the word auto in it gets our attention!!
  • Why is this feature awesome? Simply because it is so needed…

    Data gets old quicker than ever…
    Sharing here an infographic and an interesting article about this…

    And it’s really impossible to keep up with the changes! We have all been there…
  • So how does this magic happen?

    There are a few approaches out there, some scan social profiles and identify changes
    Some others like Covve do that but, also when a user changes details it automatically pushes the new details to connected contacts

    If any of your friends and professional contacts who are also using the same app, change their contact information (i.e. job title, email address, phone nr.), these are automatically synced to your phone. This happens automatically on the background

    You can see there that this happens in the background and I just get a notification that it’s updated before I even realize I should update!

    Great stuff!
  • Moving on to filtering… As we covered in the previous webinar, a good address book will contain as much info as possible…

    And that benefit is clear when it comes to filtering…

    Why do you need advance filtering? Simply because this is your best tool to uncover information hidden in your address book
  • Now the trick with advanced filtering is that is has to be both sophisticated but intuitive to use…
    Just like we got used to free text searches in google, this is how a modern address book behaves

    So for example you can type “Consulting Senior UK” and a modern address book will return contacts that fulfil that criteria!
    Or you could even just search for investment and get companies in that space…

    Why is this nice? Because many times we only remember part of the info… remember that guy I met in NY that worked for a private equity firm… which I don’t remember the name of… so searching with whatever info you have narrows down the results… and you find that guy!
  • And then for any serious filtering or data mining we can always move to the web!

    For those that haven’t seen this before… these are the contact maps of the Covve web version…
    And this opens up new opportunities…

    Just makes information stand out… basically answering the questions you didn’t even think to ask… for example, just by exploring the locations of your contacts in a visual way you many discover that you have 250 contacts in Asia… and you are in the middle of a project involving the region… then that information is gold!!!


  • Moving on to social media… love it or hate it (I personally hate it) but it’s a fact that they are a big part of the business world…
  • So why do we need to sync social media with a business address book:

    Some tools offer to:
    Extract basic contact information and profile photos and add them in your address book – to give a more complete profile
    Other Add social media links in contacts – so you can easily link to them
    While other go the more social approach and extract info like birthdays etc.

    You can decide what exactly you need
  • In my opinion – a good compromise it to add the social profiles in your contacts and link to them straight from the contact card

    In Covve this is done in the suggested improvements…
    Covve identifies social profiles and you can just select to add them to your contacts…
    And just like that you have all the profile links in your contacts
  • Now for this feature… You don’t need me to say why it’s important to Stay In Touch in the business world…

    Deals take long to happen… customer support is ongoing… developing relationships and business opportunities takes time and needs a structured plan…

    Now the issue is that this has to be a simple enough plan… and the market is moving away from monster CRM systems to achieve that…

    So with who and how often should I be in touch?

  • When staying in touch or maintaining relationships, it’s important to be prepared…
    So Covve offers a communication log, including notes that helps you immediately remember what the communication history is and use it before your next touchpoint… so you get on the phone with all relevant in hand
  • And for the next touchpoint you don’t have to so anything…

    Covve will remind you for the people you need to contact based on your set preferences and also send some small alarms if you are losing touch with an important contact!! Just to get your attention but not stress you out too much!!
  • Last point we are covering today… and it’s quite a unique feature!

    So how do we take advantage of those indirect contacts… in reality we rely on a few close friends or business associates, but a slightly extended network can have an exponential effect…
