Main role: Scunthorpe Sports AcademyPresentationwork. S&P taken on the realisation of the design by Andrew Wright Associates in this RIBA run architectu ral competition for a contemporary design pool in the central park of the town centre. The sensitive site requires a ‘special’ building. The new build innovative Sports Academy named the “PODS” will offer an eight lane 25m Swimming Pool and Learner pool with Spectator fac ilities for one hundred and fifty persons. In addition, the complex has a six court Sports hall, dance studio and a 90 station health/fitness facility. The overall design also includes ancillary public areas such as wet and dry changing facilities, Café, Crèche, Meeting/function rooms and management/business operation areas. This is one of the first projects in the UK where this type of building technique has been used for a major leisure project. The distinctive, organic and fluid building form that comprises a series of linked timber geodesic domed structures emerge from the landscape and integrates with the landscape in an innovative and gentle manner. The structure combin es glulam timber members and galvanised steel nodes in a novel and complex triangular geodesic organic domed shell structure, each timber member is of a different length and links to the nodes at different angles. A secondary timber triangular structure infills the primary structure. A timber cassette system provides the envelope, acoustic and insulation properties. A single ply membrane provides the basic waterproof surface and a rich patternation of roof finishes has also been added providing a grass sedum green roof dome , two timber shingle roof domes, a single ply membrane roof dome and a glazed and metal roof dome which is formed to enhance and complement the surrounding
landscape. The building has used the latest computer technologies from structural analysisthrough to manufacture to enable the free form organic structure to be realisedwithout which the structural concept would not have been feasible.A hall mark of this development is sustainability which includes a biomass boiler, and grey water recycling plant to feed the green roofs and the water systems in thepark. The academy has120 car parking spaces set around the east side of theacademy and the entrance vista to the academy is complimented by a fresh waterlagoon to the South linked to a sw ale that surrounds the academy. Also included in this project is the re-invigoration works to the existing wider CentralPark in Scunthorpe within which the Sports Academy will be integrated. The Park will benefit from improved landscaping, enhancements to the fountain atthe centre, imaginative new wetland areas and public landscaped walkways tointerconnect the new habitats. The creation of a new east- west Boulevard link andwildlife corridor through the park to provide direct access between the town cen treand railway station in the east and Brumby Wood and the Knowledge Campus in thewest and to link to the activities of the park including a new play area, performancearea and pavilion.Overall, the Masterplan for the external and public realm around the academy putsforward a unique and contemporary English landscape. The project draws fromtradition whilst incorporation high levels of innovative design. The whole landscapewill provide a truly enriching experience that will raise aspirations in the area andprovide an emblematic amenity for the region. This will be a challenging andrewarding opportunity for all those involved in delivering this iconic project.Estimated project cost:£24mThe building has now reached practical completion.
