3月11日に起きた東北関東大震災以降、日本は多くのメディアから注目を浴びています。日本各地でソーシャルメディアを使った情報の共有や発信が個人レベルで行われています。また、世界中の人たちは、不安な気持ちで事態の推移を見守りながら、マスメディアだけではなくソーシャルメディアからも最新情報を得ています。
 
「グローバルな視聴者・読者」と「ローカルな発信者」という両者の間には言葉の壁が立ちはだかっています。私たちは、この壁を乗り越え、情報を共有することができるのでしょうか。私たちは何を、どのように翻訳したらよいのでしょうか。Google Docsのようなクラウドコンピューティング・ツールは、その時に、どう役立つのでしょうか。今回は、地球市民のためのメディアプロジェクトである「グローバルボイス」*の編集経験をもつ佐々木朋美さんとChris Salzbergさんから「グローバルボイス」の実践をお聞きし、ソーシャルメディアの可能性について参加者の皆さんと一緒に話し合いたいと思います。

Translating in the cloud: Lessons from the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake

In the last few weeks, Japan has experienced more intense media attention than at any other time in recent history. Millions of people around the world, following developments in Japan with concern and apprehension, have turned to social media tools as a complementary, up-to-the-minute source of information alongside mass media. Japanese, in turn, have used social media tools to coordinate and share information at a local level.

Between these two perspectives -- that of the "global" onlooker and that of the "local" participant -- stands a daunting language barrier. How can we share information across this barrier? What should we translate, and how? How can “cloud computing” tools such as Google Docs help us do this? In this session, we discuss these and other questions through examples from Global Voices, a global citizen media project.
