WHAT IS GALRI?GALRI is a joint venture association of San Francisco Bay Area architectswho have been working in Haiti since January of 2010 in collaboration withHaitian professionals and citizens.The name GALRI comes from the Kreyol work for veranda or porch, thatessential Haitian place that mediates between the private interior and thepublic community life.We are focused on cultural connection and environmental sustainability asvital sparks in regeneration and redevelopment.
    3. 3. A HAITIAN KREYOL ENVIRONMENTAL PATTERN IN DETAIL: THE GALRI
    4. 4. The Galri is the central room of the Haitian home.It links the intimate private interior to the community public space of the Lakouand street.It is an outdoor living room that is climatically responsive and sociallyconnective.It’s overall form and volume, constructive elements, materials and detailscharacterize, distinguish and celebrate individual and family identity and theirconnection to the community fabric.
    5. 5. The Galri is the central room of the Haitian home, and indeed of all healthyHaitian buildings.
    6. 6. It links the intimate private interior to the community public space of theLakou, street and garden.
    7. 7. It is a critical element in the overall Creole Settlement structure.
    8. 8. The configuration of the Galri and it’s individual elements is not incidental. Theelements shape and are shaped by social spatial, material and constructiveaspects that we sometimes call “functional”, and in the decorative, finish andmaterial details they also reflect and express deeper themes of identity,distinction and celebration that we define as “artistic”.
    9. 9. Social aspects include the relationships between Private & Public, Community,Family & Individual
    10. 10. Spatial aspects include the character and relationships between Envelope,Volume, Floor, Roof, Walls, Openings.
    11. 11. Constructive aspects include the configuration and relationships betweenFoundations, Columns, Beams, & Rafters.
    12. 12. Decorative, Finish and Detail aspects include the configuration andrelationships between: Finials, Bargeboards, Eave Return Boards, Braces.Guardrails, Wall Patterns, Capitals, Bases, Additive, Subtractive Elements,Color, Texture, Pattern, Center & Field.
    13. 13. Material aspects include: Wood, Metal, Earth, Concrete (and others).
    14. 14. The Galri is an outdoor living room that is socially connective andenvironmentally climatically responsive.
    15. 15. The environmental pattern of the Galri embodies the dynamic genius of HaitianKreyol living wisdom. It is multivalent and multicultural. It is a strong typewith many individual variations. It’s elements are distinct and coherent.It is a fertile and critical ground and for sustainable, whole systems, andculturally connected environmental design.
