SO, YOU WANT TO
BUILD A MOBILE APP?
Melbourne Geek night, 22nd July 2012

@chrischinch
ARE YOU SURE?
Native App?
Mobile optimised website?
The middle ground, a Web app!
How it works… PhoneGap
• Create a self contained ‘website’ with HTML, CSS3 &
  JavaScript
• Wrap it in a mobile wrapper
  • Including iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile…
• Use Xcode, Eclipse etc to build an app
• This can be distributed in the usual ways
• Access to most hardware and internal apps

                      www.phonegap.com
Examples… PhoneGap
How it works… appcelerator
• Create a self contained ‘website’ with appcelerator’s own
  javascript-esque api.
• Code is ‘compiled’ into pseudo native code and added
  into an app
  • Mobile web, iOS and Android only (and desktop)
• Uses a custom build of Eclipse
• This can be distributed in the usual ways
• Access to most hardware
• Premium applications and extras available

                    www.appcelerator.com
Examples… appcelerator

Editor's Notes

  1. NegativeNeed to learn different programming languages, complex, lengtyh, different code bases, expensivePositiveMost efficient when done properly, full access to hardware, the ‘proper way’
  2. PositivesA lot of the time this may be enough, there are no diverging code bases, you can distribute your own wayNegativeReuires planning layout and design well (responsive), slow on some Android handsets, Can rely on network connectionMultitude of tools to help you here: Sencha, JQM
  3. If you have a client who really demands an app, if you want to sell it, if you want to cope with unreliable data connections…
  4. Recently taken over by Adobe, moving quite quickly, part of Dreamweaver, cloud build versionYou will need to create interface yourselfDemo in iOS Simulator
  5. A lot ofapostrophesDemo in Eclipse hopefully
