PHOTOGRAPHY ANALYSISI opted to go for a shot like this as itrepresents the hierarchy that will bepresent in the film trailer. I think itwill resemble it very well and willshow a strong link once finallycompleted. The next couple of slides will show the analysis of the photographs that weretaken. It’ll explain why it was taken how it was (composition, location etc.) andpossibly the plans I may have for them regarding editing and drafting.I believe a shot like this stronglyrelates to the plot. I would say thisas the word “strapped” in streetterms means that you are in apossession of a gun, if caught withone it’s highly likely you’ll be facinga prison sentence. I think havingthe actors behind a somewhatcaged fence resembles that and italso resembles guilt in all of them.Using an image such as this I thinkwould be good for my magazineposter as power and passion isrepresented through it whichclosely relates to the plot synopsisas there’s a choice to make. Havingit as a poster I think will be effectiveas here are many editing techniquesthat I could possibly use in order tohave this poster stand out and makea statement.
This photograph was taken with theintention to merge it with another inorder to make a portrait poster. I hadhis in mind as it will tell more aboutthe film rather than being soambiguous.I took this photo in order toresemble the mug shotphotographs that are taken in apolice station once the offenderhas been charged, so it gives off asense of what the film trailer mayreally be about.Considering the plot of the trailer Iwould say this relates to it well asone of the characters is leaningforwards whilst the other isrelaxing which can show a sense ofpower and domination.Lastly, this photograph was taken as again it has that somewhat mug shotlook to it as if the person has been found guilty, which closely relates tothe story line. Secondly it does show a dominating and confidentpersonality as the character is staring right into the camera and his handsare in his pockets as though he hasn’t got a care in the world. I believethis will translate well as a poster because it gives off the style andimpression I’m looking for regarding my film poster.
EDITING & DRAFTINGThe oncoming slides will show evidence of photo editing with the use of Picasa 3 aswell as drafting with the use of Adobe Photoshop CS6 using screens shots. It’ll alsoinclude a step by step explanation of the tools that were used, why and how it’smade the photograph more effective. Although I have included a various amountof photographs in the first 3 slides I haven’t opted to use all of them for photoediting or drafting.
For the first stages of editing this photograph I tampered with a few of the basic settings. I started off bystraightening the photo and it hadn’t been taken straight. Next I added a saturation in order to give it more colourrather than it looking dull and lastly I messed around with the highlights and shadows again to exaggerate thelighter and darker areas of the photograph. Then I decided to use a range of focal filters such as a soft focus, focal black and white, vignette as well as vignette withcross process. I done this as there is a main focus point of the plot and I wanted to make it evident in the trailer to whenputting the two together no complications arise about weather they relate or not. It’s also another way of me showing theaudience who the possible main characters may be.Lastly I opted to include a colour gradient and I chose the colour red to portray avarious amount of expressions such as anger, passion, love etc as these will all bepresent in the film trailer.
1. Firstly I started by including the release date onthe poster as this is a popular convention of filmposters. The I included a masthead as again it’s oneof the conventions of a poster. I opted to use the font‘Invisible Killer’ as I believe it works well with theimage as the stripes that descend at the bottom ofthe font correspond with the image as well as theconcept of bars which is what I tried to create. Inorder to finalise the masthead I added some shadeas well as a glow behind it in order for it to makemore of a statement.2. I then opted for a bit of change regarding thesecond draft I created for this image. I decided tokeep the white masthead the same as I think itcontrasts well with the background as well as thevignette effect; although I chose an alternative font asthis was a development from the previous draft. AfterI copy and pasted star icons as my intentions were toinclude review comments for the film so once thatwas done I then selected all the white area and usingthe drop down select tab clicked similar, which thenhighlighted all of the other white areas for me. I thencut it away so I was only left with the black stars. NextI scaled them down and copied them so they were allaccurate and lastly I began to add quotes that wouldentice the target market to want to watch the trailerand underneath the stars included the company thatmade this quote to show it’s from a trustworthysource. Once that was complete I opted to re arrangesome of the lettering and add more colour as I thoughit looked better this way.
Similar to the previous photograph I started off by tampering withthe highlights and shadows as I wanted to bring out andexaggerate as much of the tones within the image as possible. For these two images I decided to use a focus so it is clear to thetarget market who’s important in this trailer in addition who thepressure is on more. I’ve also opted to focus on him using thefocal black and white tool singling him out to show that he’sconfused about things because he’s the only one that in colourand the rest are in black and white.
1. For the image with just the soft focus asit’s a rather plain image I decided to use afont that would bring it back to life so I usedthe font ‘Scorched Earth’ and presented it ina red colour again similar to the previousimage involving the colour red connotesmany feelings such as passion, love andanger ect. Although I didn’t feel as though itwent with it very well so I changed the fontto ‘Bullet Campus’ as it’s suitable because itshows a divide and within the storyline thereis a divide between two families. I coloured itgrey as this gives it a gritty feel and I alsoadded a shadow to make it more dramaticand stand out on the page. Also present arethe actors names at the top of the poster.2. For the second draft I used the otherfocused image. To act as a contrast unlikethe previous draft I used the colour redagainst the black and white background inorder to add a vivid effect to it, I also optedto include a shadow to the font. I decidedon a font like this as I didn’t want to taketoo much focus away from the image and asit was red it stood out so there will be noproblem in loosing that on the poster; it’ssleek and stylish but powerful at the sametime. Finally, I added the release date to theposter.
Lastly for my last photograph I again like the previous two photographs messed around with the highlights and the shadowsin order to give it a more dramatic look. I also experimented with a grey scale effect and a cross process effect as it gave theimage a lot more depth and made it much more interesting and creative.I then used an internet software called Pixlr which allowed me to be creative as possible. I used masks which are use in thefirst two pictures. I think these creative filters especially using the colour red gives it a lot of meaning. I also used otherfilters that exaggerated the tones within the photograph and improved the skin tones of the actor. To edit this image I also used a phone application called Diptic. Iused it as it allowed me to mirror the photograph which I think iseffective and creative and very different from all of the otherphoto edits.
1. Regarding this image I used the editedversion rather than the original. Firstly Iadded the title strapped to the poster Idone this as this is a main convention of aposter for it to have a title. In addition Idecided to chose this particular font as itshows a divide, which tells the audiencethat there could be conflict within thetrailer. Next I decided to make it even morecreative my merging in another photograph.I done this as it shows the target audiencemore that could be included in the trailerand gives them more of an idea about whatthe film may be about just in case thepicture doesnt reveal it straight away.2. For the second draft I completed Iopted to use the mirrored image as I fondit rather interesting. After it was edited Iincluded the font ad allowed it to flowdown the middle of the page in order againto act like a divide. Next I selected one sideof the image and added a Gaussian blur tothe image, I done this to represent thecharacter being an enemy of himself orpossibly his alter ego etc. After this wasdone successfully I included all the otherbasic information such as the release dateand the actors names.
