Of the many journeys one makes in all the lives, the one that is most
important is the Journey within. Within us lies the core of our
consciousness, which remains undisturbed by all that happens around
us. It is this vital life force that keeps the faith alive. Char Dham
Yatra is a journey of faith. It is mentioned in ancient Hindu texts that
one can attain “Moksha” ( nirvana ) by undertaking a journey to the
Four Pilgrimage Centers – Yamnotri, Gangotri, Bdrinath and
Kedarnath known by a sacred name – Dev Bhumi or The Land of The
Gods. Yatra Char Dham is arduous and difficult journey which takes
you across seriously high Himalayan ranges where one can witness
the grandeur of God’s creation. Every step becomes a meditation and
as one becomes aware of every breath there is much that is revealed
within. One comes closer to nature and its elements as a beautiful
vision of natural beauty and magnificence unfurls in front of your
eyes. Vedic Chanting, Incense and Resonating Bells create an
enchanting atmosphere which alleviates one of all sorrows and pain.
Yatra Char Dham 2013 starts from 13th May and the traditional route
is from West to East covering Yamunotri – Gangotri – Kedarnath –
Badrinath. There are 2 routes – you can start from Dehradun or
Haridwar. The yatra to Char dham is a life time achievement and it is
believed that one can be get rid of from the continuous cycle of birth
and death and wash away all sins.
Given below is information on the 4 Pilgrimage Centers for Yatra

About Char Dham Yatra
Sri Kedarnath Dham
The most remote of the four Char Dham sites, Kedarnath is located
in the Himalayas, about 3584m (11759 Ft.) above sea level near
Corabari Glacier, the head of river Mandakini, and is flanked by
breathtaking snow-capped peaks. Kedarnath is named in honor of
King Kedar, who ruled in the Satya Yuga. He had a daughter named
Vrinda who was a partial incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. She
performed austerities for 60000 years. In honour of her, the land is
named Vrindavan. However, Kedarnath and its temple exist from the
Mahabharata Era when the Pandavas are supposed to have pleased
Lord Shiva by doing penance there. The temple opens on Akshya
Tritiya (April end or first week of May) and closes on Bhai Duj
(October end or 1st week of November) due to heavy snowfall and
extreme cold weather during winter. Kedarnath is difficult to reach.
There are 2 ways to reach the town:

Kedarnath Temple Committee, it is officially announced the opening date of kedarnath

Badrinath is the most important of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. The town
gets its name from the Holy temple of Badrinath which is situated at a height of 3,415 Mts
in the Garhwal hills, on the banks of the Alaknanda River. Badrinath lies between the Nar
and Narayana mountain ranges and in the shadow of Nilkantha peak (6,560m). Badrinath is
located 301 km north of Rishikesh. According to legend Shankara discovered a black stone
image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River.
Padma Purana celebrates Badrinath and surrounding regions as abounding in spiritual
treasures. Badrinath has been mentioned as a holy place in scriptures and legends for
thousands of years. According to the Bhagvata Purana, "There in Badrikashram the supreme
being – Lord Vishnu, in his incarnation as the sages Nara and Narayana, had been
undergoing great penance since time immemorial for the welfare of all living entities." The
Badrinath Temple is the main attraction in the town. The mountains around Badrinath are
mentioned in the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas are said to have ended their life by
ascending the slopes of a peak in western Garhwal called Swargarohini - literally, the
'Ascent to Heaven'.

The town gets its name from the Holy temple of Badrinath which is situated at a height of 3,415 Mts in the Garhwal hills, on the banks of the Alaknanda River. Badrinath lies between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges and in the shadow of Nilkantha peak (6,560m). Badrinath is located 301 km north of Rishikesh. According to legend Shankara discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River. Padma Purana celebrates Badrinath and surrounding regions as abounding in spiritual treasures. Badrinath has been mentioned as a holy place in scriptures and legends for thousands of years. According to the Bhagvata Purana, "There in Badrikashram the supreme being – Lord Vishnu, in his incarnation as the sages Nara and Narayana, had been undergoing great penance since time immemorial for the welfare of all living entities." The Badrinath Temple is the main attraction in the town.
