  3. 3. Wolfgang Aulitzky, M.D. is the Medical Director of the American Austrian Foundation. He is Assistant Dean for International Educational Development and Adjunct Professor of Urology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is also Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Innsbruck and was Visiting Scientist at the Population Council at Rockefeller University, New York. He is a member of the American, German and Austrian Societies of Urology and was awarded the Zuckerkandelpreis of the Austrian Society of Urology in 1989. In 1995 he received the Silver Medal for Merits to the Republic of Austria. As Director of the Medical Program of the American Austrian Foundation he has initiated the Salzburg Cornell-, Philadelphia- and Duke- Seminars. Dr. Aulitzky earned his medical degree at the University of Innsbruck in 1977, was a research fellow at the University of Uppsala, Sweden in 1978- 79 and at The New York Hospital - Cornell University Medical College in 1988-1989. He received his training as an urologist at the University of Innsbruck and the General Hospital of Salzburg. As a clinician he works as Medical Director of the Confraternitaet-Privatklinik Josefstadt in Vienna. He is the author of more than 140 publications on Urology, Andrology and Health Care issues and is co-author of books on basic and clinical urology/andrology.   4. 4. Gihan I. Tennekoon, M.D. (Course Director) was born in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and was educated through middle school in that country. He then completed high school and university in London, England following which he attended Guys Hospital Medical School. For his neurology training he came over to the United States to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After completing his neurology training he spent one year at Boston Children’s Hospital as a senior resident and then returned to Hopkins to Dr. Guy McKhann’s laboratory where he worked on myelination. He continued his research in myelination of the peripheral nervous system and more recently has moved to the area of stem cell biology. In 1990, Dr. Tennekoon assumed the Directorship of the Child Neurology Program at the University of Michigan. In 1995, he was recruited to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In 2000, he was appointed as the interim Director and in 2002 the permanent director of the Division of Child Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He has published papers in Nature, Neuron, Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Biological Chemistry and the Journal of Cell Biology - all papers relating to aspects of myelination. Dr. Tennekoon has served and chaired NIH study sections, and currently serves on the congressional liaison committee to improve federal funding for the NIH. Carsten Bonnemann, M.D. is a pediatric neurologist at the Children's Hospital of Phildalphia were he is Co-Director of the Neuromuscular Program and directs the Developmental Neurogenetics Clinic. He also has a laboratory devoted to the molecular genetics and molecular biology of early onset neuromuscular disorders. Dr Bonnemann graduated from medical school at the University of Freiburg in Germany. He completed general pediatric training in Hamburg and Göttingen, Germany, and child neurology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. He trained in neuromuscular disorders at Children's Hospital in Boston where he also completed a research fellowship with Dr Louis Kunkel working on the molecular genetics of muscular dystrophies. Dr Bonnemann's clinical interests revolve around genetic disorders affecting the peripheral and central nervous system, encompassing diagnosis, management as well as clinical trials. Special clinical interests within this group include the muscular dystrophies, including congenital muscular dystrophies, congenital myopathies, malformations of the central nervous system, genetic forms of mental retardation, neurometabolic disorders, ataxias and spastic paraplegias. Research in his lab is concerned with the molecular genetics and cell biology of early onset neuromuscular disorders, including congenital muscular dystrophies and congenital myopathies. Here the focus currently is on the myopathies associated with mutations in collagen type VI, as well as on rare childhood myopathies such as reducing body myopathy. Dr Bonnemann is the American Editor of the journal Neuropediatrics and serves on the Editorial Board of Neuromuscular Disorders. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Muscle Society. He is a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences and his research is funded by the National Institutes of Health as well as by the Muscular Dystrophy Association/USA. Robert Clancy, M.D. is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who received his Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics and chemistry from Georgetown University and medical doctor degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore Maryland. He performed his internship and residency training in general pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and pediatric neurology and clinical neurophysiology fellowships at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto California. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1981 and is now Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics. He is the founder and director of the Pediatric Regional Epilepsy Program of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. His clinical and research interests include neonatal neurology, neonatal seizures, neuroprotection, pediatric EEG and epilepsy. He is the author of over 80 peer- reviewed articles, 100 abstracts and co-author of the three- volume collection: “Atlas of Electroencephalography”. He currently serves as the site principal investigator for the multicentered, NIH sponsored “Childhood Absence Epilepsy” study.   7. 7. Avrum N. Pollock, M.D., FRCPC, is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in the Department of Radiology. Dr. Pollock was born in Winnipeg, Canada and attended the University of Winnipeg studying basic sciences. He received his medical degree in 1988 from the University of Manitoba, and completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Toronto. His fellowships in Pediatric Radiology and Pediatric Interventional/Body Imaging/Neuroradiology and apprenticeship in Pediatric Neuroimaging were completed at The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP). From 1996 to 2000, Dr. Pollock served as Director of Radiology Residents and Fellows at CHP. He is currently the Director of the Radiology Residents and Fellows at CHOP. Dr. Pollock is certified by the American Board of Radiology with both subspecialty certification in Pediatric Radiology and Neuroradiology. As a Pediatric Neuroradiologist, Dr. Pollock’s research interests include pediatric stroke, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, non-accidental trauma (child abuse), and radiation safety in children. Dr. Pollock has authored or co-authored research studies, abstracts and chapters for print publication including Caffey’s Pediatric Diagnostic Imaging, Imaging of Spine Trauma, Pediatrics, and Journal of Neurotrauma. He is a member of several professional societies including the Radiological Society of North America, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Radiologists, the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology, the American Society of Neuroradiology, and the Society for Pediatric Radiology.
