2 Nephi 28:30
“For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will
give unto the children of men line upon
line, precept upon precept, here a little and
there a little; and blessed are those who
hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear
unto my counsel, for they shall learn
wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will
give more; and from them that shall say,
We have enough, from them shall be taken
away even that which they have.”

So what is most important?
Don’t paint yourself into a corner.

Fall 2013 BYU-Idaho Summit Presentation

Editor's Notes

  1. Here is where I’m from. Small town in WV. Neighbors Porky, Mama Foos, Ganky, RayRay, BoBo, PunkinHere is what I do:Digital Publishing CoordinatorNew position in the Church — about 6 months. Bring together content created by all departments.Determine how and where content will be delivered: Home page, social channels, mobile apps, email, etc.Fun things: real-time publishing for general conference
  2. College is a time for you to really get to know your major. If you are comparing college to a relationship, college is the dating that happens after the mission. Serious enough — but not so serious that you can’t still change things around if things don’t seem to be working out.
  3. I knew from the time I was 10 years old I wanted to be a journalist.• Cut out stories.• Read paper when friends playing.• Best friend read paper at house.• USA Today on campus.
  4. Here is what has happened in the world of print journalism since I graduated. So I found that if I wanted to stay afloat, I needed to adapt. But print journalism is what I knew.Fortunately, PRINT journalusm was not the ONLY thing that interested me. In fact, a lot of things interest me.
  5. College is the beginning of learning for your career. The rest of the learning happens very much on a daily basis.
  6. If you know that college is just the beginning, then what do you need to know as you are coming out of college?
  7. Do not paint yourself into a corner. No matter what you have spent the last few semesters studying, you should not limit yourself to being defined as a certain position. • Mindset for you.• Mindset for others. Why is this important? Let me tell you an example:
  8. I want an employee who can do anything. Not editor, not PR practicioner, not social writer, not journalist.
  9. In the midst of this all editors were reclassified from editors to multimedia editors. Added responsibilities and less people to do the work. Some have retired — some have stepped up and thrived.
  10. Train a horse where to go: put on blindersHave them put their hands to eyes as blinders. Tell them that they see me. Here is what they don’t see: they don’t see others in this room, they don’t see outside the door, they don’t see other presenters today. Right now (for this hour) is a good time for blinders — but there is a lot more to learn.Take off the blinders after you graduate.
  11. Show importance of depth (what you are learning now)Show breadth (what you will learn every day starting after graduation)(Give example of what a T-shaped person can do)
  12. Never ever ever think: “I don’t need to know that.” These are the things that make me valuable as an employee.
  13. So how did I build my “T?”Show all these titles as a column — remove one of the titles and have the rest of the column fall.Editorial internFeatures editorBeat reporterWebmasterArts and Entertainment editorCommunications specialistCommunications managerVideo producerMagazine editorMultimedia editorSenior multimedia editorSocial media managerDigital content strategistDigital Publishing Coordinator
  14. Show all these titles as a column — remove one of the titles and have the rest of the column fall.Editorial internFeatures editorBeat reporterWebmasterArts and Entertainment editorCommunications specialistCommunications managerVideo producerMagazine editorMultimedia editorSenior multimedia editorSocial media managerDigital content strategistDigital Publishing CoordinatorRodeo clown
  15. If you are waiting on somebody to tell you every detail about what you should do, you might as well just tell them: Please, never promote me.I want somebody who will listen, expand on direction, bring back ideas to me I hadn’t considered.Example: Facebook cover images to promote conference were the idea of an intern.
  16. Comm specialist for Ogden City Council. Convinced council needed to buy HD camera, equipment, etc. I had no idea how to use it and edit. I did it. Was offered job to be PR video producer for mayor of Richmond Va. After only making one video. Soon later became communications manager for city.
  17. How does a child learn — they ask questionsChildren between 1-5 ask 76 questions per hour. More than one per minute.“question-asking is not something that children do every now and then -- asking questions is a central part of what it means to be a child."
  18. Method is to find a bush close to something your prey needs - usually water - climb in and wait. Anticipate needs and deliver.Opportunity comes — make the absolute most of it because you don’t know when the next one will come. Application that led to my being hired in current position – easily spent 50 hours on the application. Who wants it most? You do? Prove it.• Have a little faith in yourself. The hard work DOES pay off. I prepared myself more than anybody else.I’ve always made sure of that. It has been rare that if I get a job interview, I don’t get offered the job.
  19. It goes like this: 163 people across four separate tests -- everyone wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment to this goal to the room, and half didn't. • 45 minutes of work that would directly lead them towards their goal• Could stop any time.
  20. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?><poll url="http://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/HuzfgXdwu9mW3Tq"> <!-- This snippet was inserted via the PollEv Presenter app --> <!-- The presence of this snippet is used to indicate that a poll will be shown during the slideshow --> <!-- TIP: You can draw a solid, filled rectangle on your slide and the PollEv Presenter will automatically display your poll in that area. --> <!-- The PollEv Presenter app must also be running and logged in for this to work. --> <!-- To remove this, simply delete it from the notes yourself or use the PollEv Presenter to remove it for you. --> <title>Which group came closer to accomplishing their goals?</title></poll>
  21. Ask for someone to shut out a career goal. Think of a goal. Imagine yourself achieving that goal. Imagine how happy you are. Imagine how great everyone thinks you are. Imagine how proud of you your parents are.Psychology tests have shown that the more you tell someone your goal, the less likely you are to achieve it.Usually you don’t feel satisfied until a goal is achieved. But when you tell people, you kind of trick your mind into telling yourself that it is already done. Now that you feel so great about doing it, you no longer want to put the hard work into actually doing the thing. “Social reality.”
  22. Social media is so new that you can still fool some people who think that you are young so you know it all about social media. There are many capable managers out there who perfectly understand the value of social media. You will not fool these people unless you really know what you are talking about.Never ever ever ever call yourself a social guru or a content ninja or a etc.Socialtimes.com Job posts reveal social skills people wantTwitter: 44 percent growthInstagram: 44 percent growth
  23. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?><poll url="http://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/H52dGBjwlUMSpxD"> <!-- This snippet was inserted via the PollEv Presenter app --> <!-- The presence of this snippet is used to indicate that a poll will be shown during the slideshow --> <!-- TIP: You can draw a solid, filled rectangle on your slide and the PollEv Presenter will automatically display your poll in that area. --> <!-- The PollEv Presenter app must also be running and logged in for this to work. --> <!-- To remove this, simply delete it from the notes yourself or use the PollEv Presenter to remove it for you. --> <title>There may be something on</title></poll>
  24. When I hire someone, I’m not just gradually checking social channels, I’m googling, I’m Facebook stalking, I’m reading dozens of tweets, checking Instagram — full stalk modeMaybe oldr people won’t do that, but guess what — it’s people my age who are hiring you.I see anything that I don’t like, you’re going to go down a notch before I ever even talk to you. What don’t I like: too much: 67,000 tweetsInappropriate selfiesLinks to questionable content
  25. Give example of plate spinner for balance.
  26. 2. Think Outside the BoxGo against the grain. Alec Brownstein created an online ad that would appear every time employers he was targeting (New York creative directors) searched their own names. It cost him $6. He got hired.Ads won’t necessarily get you a job, but doing something people aren’t expecting, or that hasn’t been done before, will get you noticed. If you can’t market yourself, then how are you going to market your products?Talk about what I did for creating videos, magazine, short clips for job interview
  28. Captious: tending to find fault or raise petty objections.
  29. Writing should invite me to do something — regardless of it it is for a consumer or for a co-worker — the last thing I want is to see writing that doesn’t move me at all, or even worse, writing that I can’t understand.Vivid verbsConcrete nounsHow do you become a better writer:Read (being a good writer innate? Not exactly, but it is acquired through knowing how to tell a good story)PracticeGet feedback
  30. Data informs decisions.Irresponsible to not use data. Don’t go with gut.
  31. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?><poll url="http://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/IsWt7Fwd3J39gRI"> <!-- This snippet was inserted via the PollEv Presenter app --> <!-- The presence of this snippet is used to indicate that a poll will be shown during the slideshow --> <!-- TIP: You can draw a solid, filled rectangle on your slide and the PollEv Presenter will automatically display your poll in that area. --> <!-- The PollEv Presenter app must also be running and logged in for this to work. --> <!-- To remove this, simply delete it from the notes yourself or use the PollEv Presenter to remove it for you. --> <title>Have you heard me make a mistake today?</title></poll>
  32. Psychology of the apology:We know we are supposed to apologize because it’s the right thing to do. Here is what else:Emotional Benefits of Apology •A person who has been harmed feels emotional healing when he is acknowledged by the wrongdoer. •When we receive an apology, we no longer perceive the wrongdoer as a personal threat. •Apology opens the door to forgiveness by allowing us to have empathy for the wrongdoer.
  33. Your audience is not the world — even in the Church we’re defining that we can’t just say we’re going to go after the world. We’ve got to pick a groups and go with them. Get data and then decide.
  34. Content marketing is a tactic: Need to first have a content strategy. Strategy is we want to get people from A to B to C.Ontent marketing is we are going to create awesome content to make that happen.
  35. People who haven’t gotten into it at all will look to you. Huge opportunities for growth of career. Can use it in strategic thinking and planning.Use of it will spark ideas — not that they will always work. You’re not going to use it all, but it is good to understand it so you now why or why not.
