  2. 2. Computer is used as a tool and a medium to facilitate people in learning, such as learning a language.<br />Computer is more interactive aid compared from another media.<br />Yet it is powerless and dependent to the users.<br />Roles of Computers in Learning<br />
  3. 3. The development of information technology has encouraged the expert in education to conduct the experiment of using computer in for educational purpose.<br />The use of computer in the learning process has many advantages for the students’ learning progress. <br />Computers and language learning<br />
  4. 4. It can be used:<br />to make an interaction with the students,<br />to enhance language learning,<br />to generate examples to illustrate certain operations,<br />to stimulate conversation.<br />
  5. 5. There are some evidences that show unidentical effect of using computer for the language learning purpose.<br />However the efectiveness of using computer in language learning is also influenced by social and individual differences of the students.<br />
  6. 6. Issues regarding the change of methods of language teaching<br />For the purpose of improving English language teaching some methods have been developed.<br />The latest method is developed as a reaction of the weaknesses of the former method.<br />
  7. 7. The following are the descriptions of some methods in language teaching and their weakness:<br />

  10. 10. And nowadays the experts assume that computer based language instruction is better than any other methods in a number of ways.<br />
  11. 11. CAL program is the use of computer in the learning progress usually by means of an interactive – computer system.<br />CALL is CAL program used in the process of language teaching and learning.<br />CAL and CALL: What are they?<br />

The assumption that computers in language learning is better than other methods is based on the considerations below:<br />Computer is flexible<br />Computer has the ability to interact with the students<br />Computer can create a new classroom context that appears to make interaction among children<br />Computer can encourage the students in learning a language<br />CALL: Underlying considerations<br />

Advantages:<br />Related to reading habit, CALL encourages the users to develop a non sequential reading habit.<br />CALL allows users to choose any topic of information available within the package.<br />CALL encourages the users to make a collaboration in the learning process.<br />The students have no limited time to learn language by using CALL program.<br />Advantages and Disadvantages of CALL<br />
