Personal Big Data

  1. 1. LIFELOGGING A NEW BIG DATA CHALLENGE Dr Cathal Gurrin cathal@gmail.com & @cathal INSIGHT, Dublin City University, Ireland EU Delegation to Japan 03rd October 2014
  2. 2. BIG DATA Data so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using traditional data processing applications. My research group looks at personal (little)-big data. Active in the area since 2006.
  3. 3. DIDTHE PERSON Organise, Understand, Search Log Access
  4. 4. Extreme Lifelogging A Personal Awareness Engine (a second memory) that knows everything about you. It is there to help you, but never to replace an organic memory. Using body-worn and external sensors.
  5. 5. A ONEYEAR LIFELOG • 2 million wearable camera images • Video / audio (hundreds/thousands of hours) • 3.9 million location points • Hundreds of millions of sensor readings (accl, WIFI, bluetooth, etc…) to understand the person better • Information access, creation and communication to model semantic memory ? Semantics ? Assumption:All data is potentially useful.
  6. 6. Integrating many new
 sensor and feedback
 sources
  7. 7. The challenge is to extract meaning from the sensor data. Data Analytics & BigData Analytics Raw$ Sensors$ What$doing$ What$ Environment$ Movement$ • Ac8vity$ • Energy$ Where$Who$is$there$ When$$ Why$
  8. 8. AND DEVELOP PROTOTYPES FOR REAL-WORLD EVALUATION With partner collaborators (e.g. healthcare partners, market research partners, hardware manufacturers) and based on our own understanding.
  9. 9. UNDERSTANDTHE CONTEXT
  10. 10. VISUAL EVENT-MEMORY DAILYVISUAL DIARY
  11. 11. Enhanced Understanding of Self QUANTIFIED SELF ANALYSIS COLOUR OF LIFE
  12. 12. Activity Understanding Lifestyle Infographics QUANTIFIED SELF ANALYSIS HEALTH, SOCIAL, SECURITY
  13. 13. Information Recall ENHANCING PRODUCTIVITY I HAVE READ IT BEFORE... SOMEWHERE
  14. 14. OBJECT ENHANCEMENT DEVICE PERSONALITIES & ROBOTICS
  15. 15. ! ! ! Finding Items from the past… Object Matching & Result Visualisation from wearable video (with GPS) MEMORY SEARCH
  16. 16. WHILE BEING PRIVACY- AWARE
  17. 17. THANKYOU FORYOUR ATTENTION cathal@gmail.com & @cathal http://www.computing.dcu.ie/~cgurrin/ Any Questions? (c) DCU 2014
