8. 8. Creative Many Census

Why is it important

Artists and creative practitioners contribute so much culturally, aesthetically, socially and economically . However we generally don’t have the data to show the real impact that we make in our communities.

The census has been designed to demonstrate not just what you need as practitioners but what you contribute .

Having good data is key to influencing decision makers and making the case for artists and the arts.

 9. 9. Creative Many Census

Why is it important to YOU

Be your own best advocate.

Take action on issues that matter to you armed with data to help influence the outcome.

Example – if you knew what the average income for artists by different job and industry codes or for creative work, could you negotiate for better pay and benefits?

Example – if you knew how much you were personally paying in renting office, studio, rehearsal or work space and that of other artists, could you look at alternative and cooperative spaces? Would you consider buying a formerly foreclosed upon home and rehab it for studio, office, or accommodation?

 10. 10. Creative Many Census

Why is it important to YOU

Reflective practitioners in charge of their own careers.

The census asks questions that can help you to have an overview of your own practice and career allowing you to think about your goals , make plans and or take steps to get you to the next level and aid in your own decision-making.

Example – if you knew what kind of opportunities were important to you but missing in you creative practice right now, what steps would you take to cultivate those opportunities?

Example – if you knew proportionally where your opportunities for presenting your work and having it validated were coming from and it wasn’t in Flint, what steps would you take to set up your own networks and groups? If it was in Flint, what steps would you take to grow your networks and groups beyond the county?

 11. 11. Creative Many Census

Why is it important to YOU

Having the bird’s eye view

You know who’s who in your discipline (well at least how many who’s who exist)

You know where they live (well actually you know what zip codes have high concentrations of artists)

You know where your discipline stacks up against other disciplines

You’re a geek and love to spout facts about artists to people

You love educating people against their will about how important artists and creative practitioners are

 12. 12. Creative Many Census

There are 3 Parts to the Creative Many Census

Part 1

Demographics (Required)

Creative Work (Required)

Economic and Community Impact (Required)

Part 2

Household Information (Not Required)

Participation (Not Required)

Part 3

Basic Information (Required)

 13. 13. Creative Many Census

It will take about an hour and a half to complete.

It is important to us to support artists and creative practitioners, so we are offering three mini-grants at $1500, $1000, $500 to randomly selected participants completing all sections of the census by March 7.

 14. 14. Creative Many Census

What does mini-grant mean?

We will award three grants to randomly selected participants completing all parts of the census. If you are selected you may use the money in any way you need to support you or your creative practice . These are not project grants.

What does randomly selected mean?

The computer essentially assigns everyone that completed all parts of the census a unique ID that the computer then selects at random (like a name being drawn from a hat). It keeps selecting until 3 unique ID’s have been chosen. The unique ID’s are then matched to your contact info from Part 3.

Can’t you use those unique ID’s to find out my answers from Part 1 and 2?

No. The computer assigns a completely different set of unique ID’s to participants completing Parts 1 and 2. Ensuring your answers are anonymous in those sections.

 15. 15. Creative Many Census

When will you be notifying people if they have been selected?

We will notify the 3 selected participants by March 15, 2010 and will publically announce it once they have accepted the grant.

Is there a catch?

No. Randomly selected participants will be asked to sign a simple agreement with ArtServe and will have to fill in a simple one-page final report by April 20, 2010 as part of the grant and for our reporting purposes to Ruth Mott Foundation.

 16. 16. Creative Many Census

Data handling, security and privacy

NOTE: We would like to stress that none of your personal contact information will be shared or linked to any specific question you answer in any part of this census. Only the aggregate data will be shared. So what does that actually mean?

Data collected from you during the census is completely anonymous .

Data collected in the final section of the census, Basic Information is completely segmented, ensuring that we are not able to link any information entered in that section with information entered in any of the other sections of the census.

 17. 17. Creative Many Census

Data handling, security and privacy

Why do we ask for contact information in the Basic Information section?

We need to be able to prove that an actual person answered the questions

We need to make sure that there are no duplicate or multiple entries by a single participant

Provides an opportunity for participants to be part of ArtServe’s contact database (optional)

Provides an opportunity for participants to be part of a directory of greater Flint area artists and creative practitioners that is publically accessible (optional)

Provides an opportunity for participants to be entered into the mini-grant lottery (only if completing all sections of the census)
