  3. 3. Who is Saint George? <ul><li>Saint George is the patron saint of England. His emblem is the flag of England. </li></ul><ul><li>He was born during the III Century A.D. (After Christ Death) in the old Capadoccia (nowadays is Turkey). He was a brave Roman soldier who protested against the Roman’s torture of the Christians and died for his beliefs. </li></ul><ul><li>I n the 12th century the emblem was adopted by Richard The Lionheart whose soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle. </li></ul>

Can you tell the legend? <ul><li>There is a dragon who terrorizes a town. </li></ul><ul><li>The people in town do a raffle and the King’s daughter, a young princess , is offered to the dragon . </li></ul><ul><li>When George heard s about this he r ides into the village . </li></ul><ul><li>George kills the dragon and rescue s the princess . </li></ul>

How does England celebrate Saint George’s Day? <ul><li>On the Sunday nearest to 23 rd of April, scouts and guides throughout England parade through high streets and attend a special St George's Day service at their local church . </li></ul><ul><li>By tradition is the day for a red rose in the button hole, the national flower. It is not as celebrated as St Patrick ’s day. </li></ul><ul><li>For most people in England St George's Day is just another ordinary working day. </li></ul><ul><li>In fact, m ore than a quarter of people living in England do not even know who their patron saint is! </li></ul>
  6. 6. How is the English flag? What does it mean? <ul><li>The flag has got a red cross of a martyr in the middle on a white background. </li></ul><ul><li>The colours mean : </li></ul><ul><li>White : peace and honesty </li></ul><ul><li>Red : - hardiness, bravery, strength and valour . </li></ul>
  7. 7. Who is the famous Englishman that was born and died on April 23 rd ? And what famous Spanish writer died the same day as well? <ul><li>Shakespeare was born on 23 rd of April 1564 and he died on the same day in 1616 . </li></ul><ul><li>Miguel de Cervantes died on the 22nd of April but buried on the 23rd of April. What day is the 23 rd of April? <ul><li>It’s Saint George’s Day. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1923 a writer from Valencia, Vicens Clavell, chooses this day to give a book in Saint George’s Day because Cervantes and Shakespeare dead that day. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1995 Unesco chooses that day to become the International Day of the Book. This is to promote reading, publishing and copyright. </li></ul><ul><li>A Golf cup is celebrated during that day. </li></ul>
