  11. 11. Conjecture #1: Tablets will be a third device in the enterprise, at least for the next two years.11 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
  12. 12. Prediction #1 Apple will win but not sweep the tablet market. iPad’s share will be somewhere between iPhone’s share and iPod’s share.12 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
  13. 13. An abundance of smart device platforms exist andthere will never be a single “winner”13 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
  14. 14. Consumer and IT dynamics will shape the enterprise tablet market What employees want What IT wants One tablet for work and home One enterprise-grade platform The latest, coolest, best tablet With security & mgt support Apps, media, and more apps Running existing applications To leave their laptops home That replaces a laptop There’s a basic conflict here that will have to be settled through negotiation and a basic restructuring of the mobile funding and application delivery strategy.14 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. 15. 15. Other key considerations for tablets IT learned from iPhones -- it is way ahead on support iPads – MobileIron, Good Technology, Sybase, RIM, 20 others play here HTML5 is the *only* way out of the platform proliferation problem, but today only native apps deliver the experience that people expect In a fragmented world of confusing products, ads, and promises, the safe choice – iPad – will win Retail distribution is a big deal in tablet’s consumerization future Network support matters, but not always wireless carrier support15 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. 16. 16. What will shape Apple’s enterprise future? (Quiet) commitment to enterprise needs and practicalities The App ecosystem, including business software High-quality products, carrier support, retail distribution Mobile device management vendor support Employee’s continued interest in Apple’s products and digital experience16 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
  17. 17. Prediction #2 Only three tablet platforms will ultimately matter to enterprise buyers. (though I’d take a flier on Microsoft, myself)17 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
  18. 18. But it’s Apple’s game to lose in the enterprise in 2011 RIM will make some progress with PlayBook, but the jury is still (way) out on whether employees will want it. (Though IT will.) Android tablets will also make some progress, but they must compete in the open consumer market alongside Apple. Cisco’s, HP’s tablets face an uphill slog for enterprise attention and consumer interest. Windows “tablets” will displace some laptops, but not iPads. The rest are very likely to be also-rans.18 © 2010 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
