• Intro slide -
• Quick background in pictures Careers team – looks like a lot of people but over half are the GoWales team, two full time Careers Advisers. E-guidance strategy to support the face to face guidance that the CAs provide Me, Jo Careers library getting much smaller as much is on line (picture of a bookshelf) Screen shot of the website emphasise tools and partners with e-focus
• Careers team at Swansea Based in Library and Information Services
• Careers library How the physical library has decreased in size Used to be a large room about the size of this seminar room Employer info, LMI, Occupational Info, Career Planning books A lot of this is now available on line; employer webpages, occupational info, LMI We are left with two shelves of Career Planning and support books and a bookshelf for various employer and Careers free handouts for students
• View from my office – just about see the sea
• The view from my window at home The Black mountains in winter earlier this year
• GoWales concentrates on placements, tasters and jobs based in Wales GradIntel – matches graduates with employers Prospects – Career planning AGCAS – UK wide professional body, great support within the community by email Example of the support email that comes into the link Email is still new for some in this community
• Emerging technologies in Careers The growth of the internet, its accessibility to the general public and the ease with which we can now so easily edit the web ourselves (web 2.0) has meant that students and graduates are online more and more. Employers have much more web presence. We need to be using new web 2.0 features and engaging with students more and more
• This took me very much by surprise as I love using Google. However, when I thought about it, I do follow links that friends, peers, and people whose blogs I follow recommend I may still use Google more but what about our students? We know that very many of them love being on Facebook…maybe they follow recommendations more than they search for themselves Food for thought and I will return to the theme
• Social Networking things
• Results of the audience voting
• Results of the audience voting
• Screen shot of LinkedIn – maybe go to it depends on the speed of the internet connection Recently HE professionals have started using LinkedIn in increasing numbers I can easily post a question and others will respond – the nature of Careers professionals I decide which posts/topics to follow
• SMU Careers homepage with quick links to a FB page and Twitter
• Swansea Uni homepage - quick links to Twitter
• Students don’t want us as friends, no problem Groups are also invasive A page is like a billboard, students can look at it and they can become a fan, but you don’t get everyone's chat RSS feeds from vacancy database and other basic information
• RSS feeds to jobs from key databases Story of hootsuite Jo ask a question to the community in LinkedIn and someone replied with a reference to Hootsuite Show the flow on LinkedIn
• RSS feeds to jobs from key databases Story of hootsuite Jo asked a question to the community in LinkedIn and someone replied with a reference to Hootsuite Show the flow on LinkedIn
• Track statistics
• Twitjobsearch and see what jobs are available near your postcode
• With a small group we did not want to create too much extra work. One CA writes for the student paper a brief article on a Career topic. We decided to use this as a post in a blog – some feedback from students Manchester Uni Careers have several blogs and CAs submit posts regularly Students do feedback but not in large numbers We have an archive of e-guidance emails that CAs have sent to individual students that can be made anonymous and then re-used for blog posts
• Manchester Careers has 6 separate blogs Feedback from students isn’t great but building – confidence?
• Results from audience voting
• Technology lets us reliably stream videos. We have built up a library of videos to support the CAs. IT systems and Media Resources have co-operated to support these activities WVN – Using video conferencing to hold meetings with the AGCAS ICT Working group Set up Skype with some members of staff with an idea to support graduates (but not yet)
• Co-operation with Reading University The community updates the material
• Abintegro Co-operations between Ab and employers to create this library of videoa
• Prospects Net - Graduate Prospects is the UK’s official graduate careers support service and the commercial subsidiary of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU)
• The GoWales website then includes vacancies from all universities in Wales All Welsh Universities Careers Services co-operating with each other to the benefit of students and graduates in Wales
• PebblePad – introduced under SWWHEP
• Blackboard – Interactive Career Planning Main tools grouped here
• The future? Use of mobile phones In third world countries the telcos offer texts and one minute talking at 1 cent Why not in the western world Mobile technology is how most people in India and Africa get access to the internet
• Sad fact, but why not use it Mobile phones for voting, revision, job alerts etc
