Latin litterae, or literature, is the art of written works, commonly classified as fiction or non-fiction. Within these classifications are two major techniques - poetry, which emphasizes rhythmic language qualities, and prose, which applies ordinary grammar and speech flow. Genres of literature consist of artistic works that share certain central themes such as romance, mystery, crime, fantasy, erotica, and adventure.
