When In Rome

 1. 1. When in Rome: Teaching 21st Century Students Using 21st Century Tools Presented at 12th Annual Instructional Technology Conference April 1-3, 2007 Carter F. Smith Assistant Professor, Criminal Justice Administration Middle Tennessee State University
 2. 2. 387 A.D.

When St. Augustine arrived in Milan, he observed that the Church did not fast on Saturday as did the Church at Rome.

He consulted St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan, who replied: "When I am at Rome, I fast on a Saturday; when I am at Milan, I do not. Follow the custom of the Church where you are."

The comment was changed to "When they are at Rome, they do there as they see done" by Robert Burton in his Anatomy of Melancholy.

Eventually it became

" When in Rome, do as the Romans do ."

(Wallechinsky & Wallace, 1981)

 3. 3. When in Rome, do as the Romans do

21 st Century translation (Higher Ed. Version)

When Teaching Those

Who Come to Learn,

Why Not Teach

the Way They Learn?

 4. 4. Why do something different?

The Roman empire is growing. Our civilization is still the largest, but as we age we will lose our dominance.

It is predicted that our country will be dependent on Romans for survival within 15 years.

By providing the Romans with the proper training now, we can help assure their success in the future.

 5. 5. What should we do differently?

Use communications methods Romans have already adopted.

Find the most effective teaching style, not the most familiar one.

Teach to provoke thought and retention, not boredom and brain damage.

 6. 6. Is what we're doing working?

Romans have tolerated our minimally effective teaching and communication style for many years.

They have adapted, but have developed a far superior method of communication on their own.

By learning and using their method we can drastically increase the effectiveness of information transfer and demonstrate to them that we are willing to make an effort (and communicate with them).

This is expected to pay big dividends in the future when we are all under the control of the Roman empire.

 7. 7. Romans Today

Online presence (almost since birth).

Integrate technology into their lives.

Use social networking sites/virtual communities to supplement (not replace) relationships.

Are better reached by active learning methods.

Need to hone collaborative skills.

 8. 8. How could we do it better?

We are accustomed to a “learning” communication style that emphasizes one-way communication.

Romans have consistently demonstrated a preference for two-way communication.

Only by finding ways to convey information to them in two-way communication methods can we expect to catalyze their learning experience.

 9. 9. Which two-way communication methods should we use?

Written

E-mail

Instant messaging

Message boards

Text messages

Verbal

Phone calls

Face-to-face communication

Which is the preferred method?

 10. 10. How do we know it will work?

Ask them! Romans are able to respond to inquiries with thoughtful answers.

Let’s stop talking in front of them as if they aren’t in the room!

Try it! Invest the time in learning their language.

Schedule a trip to Rome. Get first-hand exposure to the culture.

Test it! Conduct your own research and decide for yourself.

If it doesn't work, maybe you'll get a couple of “cool points” you didn't have before.

 11. 11. Roman Culture

Vocabulary includes

Emoticons

Abbreviations

Average day includes

School

Work

Friends

Relationships include

Face-to-face

Written communication

 12. 12. Adapting to Roman Culture

Collaborative Learning

Using Established Social Networks

Creativity and Imagination

 13. 13. How much will it cost us?

The investment will depend on where you are now and where you want to be.

Added time may be needed to learn the language and adjust your communication methods.

Overnight change is not recommended, nor will it be as effective.

In order for maximum results, ensure that a few Romans witness your struggles through the transformation.

If you really want to make an impact, enlist selected Romans to guide you through the process.

 14. 14. Cost for use

Email - $0

Social Networking site - $0

IM account - $0

Text messaging on mobile phone $?

Depends on provider

Communication with students . . .

 15. 15. What will we get from the investment?

You'll experience the joy of learning something new.

You are likely to get envious looks from your peers.

Ultimately, you'll find that it takes less time to communicate more information.

In the end, you will have the satisfaction of equipping an entire generation of Romans with the tools and weapons needed to rule the world.

 16. 16. What is the alternative?

Failure to adapt may result in premature job loss, or ineffective performance.

As a result, the Romans with whom you are engaged will be ill-prepared for future assignments.

Though this may not be tremendously damaging in the short-term, over time the failure to adapt will have exponential cataclysmic results.

The future of the free world is in your hands.

 17. 17. How do we get started?

One step at a time.

Get an account.

Familiarize.

Try it out.

Try it again.

Remember

Rome wasn't built in a day!

 18. 18. Start with . . .

Feedback from a specific event in class.

Providing additional information on something in which there was interest.

Wishing a happy birthday, enjoyable break, etc.

Inviting to an event, guest speaker . . .

Using your imagination.

 19. 19. What do the Romans think about this?

Romans experiencing these techniques, many for the first time, have been heard making the following comments.

like you said in class . . .

ok, so i need to talk to you if u have some free time

Thank you so much for all of your help

I am so glad that you put that link up. I am doing a paper on gangs for my english glass

Its almost wierd having my teacher on facebook. but its pretty cool that u can get on "our level"
