This document provides an introduction and overview of using the iNaturalist mobile app and website to contribute observations during a BioBlitz of the Anacostia River watershed from September 21-24. It outlines the skills that will be covered in the training, including exploring and adding observations, photos, comments, and identifications to projects on both the website and app. Tips are provided on using the computer vision tool, taking effective photos, and where to find additional resources and support. The goal is to engage participants in conducting an intensive biological inventory of the watershed area over a short period of time.

Thank you very much for the invitation to your BioBlitz to share what we have been doing and to learn from you. In my presentation I will explain more about how we have used iNaturalist in our BioBlitzes with the National Park Service, give an overview of how it works and where the data go, and explain the basics of using the app.
Definition:
Raise your hand if you’ve ever been to a BioBlitz?
I like to describe iNaturalist’s role as turning photos of plants and animals into useful scientific data.
iNaturalist is a social network where people share observations of biodiversity from anywhere in the world. It is both a website and an app (the app is specialized for adding observations and the website has many more functions).
THESE NOTIFICATIONS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO PAY ATTENTION TO! If your observations don’t have a location, they probably won’t get any attention.
We don’t always know the importance of what we see until we share it! In this way, iNaturalist is helping us broaden the impact of BioBlitzes.
I could talk much more, but I wanted to cover these basics. I am happy to answer more questions about iNaturalist and BioBlitz.
