Sanidoor® [san-a-dohr] is a touch-free door
opening system designed to reduce the spread
of germs by eliminating contact with the door
surface when entering and exiting restrooms.
Protected by United States and international
patents.
After an initial production run of 300 units, the Sanidoor®
product was brought to the Craig Technologies engineering

  1. 1. ® Overview: After an initial production run of 300 units, the Sanidoor® product was brought to the Craig Technologies engineering design team by its inventor to troubleshoot the unit’s failure. Causes ranged from electrical short circuiting, motor back current, and material fatigue. Challenges: Craig Technologies Design Engineering Case Study: Sanidoor® Sanidoor® [san-a-dohr] is a touch-free door opening system designed to reduce the spread of germs by eliminating contact with the door surface when entering and exiting restrooms. Protected by United States and international patents. Technical Specifications: 24 volt 4 watt motor, with electro-optical position encoder Rechargeable lead batteries (requires 220 volt AC power to charge) 6-part gear train mechanism In-system programmable controller Passive Infrared (PIR) detection The original Sanidoor® system was produced from a foreign design, requiring the Craig Technologies team to translate the design language. No specifications were provided from the original production. The Craig Technologies team was required to address the lack of configuration management of several iterations in the foreign design of Sanidoor ® to interpret the system’s complexity and propensity to fault. A cost analysis was conducted by the Craig Technologies team to determine cost savings in redesign and new production order versus retrofit of existing Sanidoor® units. The original Sanidoor® system contained an embedded microcontroller which required the Craig Technologies team to integrate reconfigured electrical and mechanical components. Only the executable code was provided. The preprogrammed chips already soldered in the original Sanidoor® units required the Craig Technologies team to explore options for ISP in situ, or assembling new control boards. Solutions: The Craig Technologies team designed and manufactured a new slip clutch mechanism in-house to stop gear strip in the Sanidoor® units. By reprogramming the sensor to detect the door position in relation to the clutch, the Craig Technologies team was able to keep the Sanidoor® units in sync with patrons. A new self-charging battery system (with integrated generator) for Sanidoor® is being explored by the Craig Technologies team.
