Wolfgang Aulitzky, MD is the Medical Director of theAmerican Austrian Foundation.He is Associate Dean for International Medicine and DistanceLearning, Adjunct Prof. of Clincal Urology and Adjunct Prof. ofClinical Reproductive Medicine at the Weill Medical College ofCornell University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is alsoAssociate Prof. of Urology at the University of Innsbruck andwas Visiting Scientist at the Population Council at RockefellerUniversity, New York. He is a member of the American,German and Austrian Societies of Urology and was awardedthe Zuckerkandelpreis of the Austrian Society of Urology in1989. In 1995 he received the Silver Medal and 2007 theGolden Medal for Merits to the Republic of Austria. As Directorof the Medical Program of the American Austrian Foundationhe has initiated the Salzburg Cornell-, Philadelphia-,Columbia- and Cleveland Duke Seminars. Dr. Aulitzky earnedhis medical degree at the University of Innsbruck in 1977, wasa research fellow at the University of Uppsala, Sweden in1978-79 and at the New York Hospital - Cornell UniversityMedical College in 1988-1989. He received his training as anurologist at the University of Innsbruck and the GeneralHospital of Salzburg. As a clinician he works as MedicalDirector and Chairman of the Department of Urology at theConfraternitaet-Privatklinik Josefstadt in Vienna. Walter Klepetko, MD (Co-Course Director) is Professor ofSpecial Thoracic Surgery and Director of the LungTransplantation Program at the Medical University of Vienna,Austria.Professor Klepetko received his board certifications from theAustrian Board of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, the Austrian Boardof Vascular Surgery and the European Board of Thoracic andCardiovascular Surgery (FEBTCS). He is a full member ofseveral national (Austrian Surgical Society, AustrianTransplant Society, Austrian Pulmonological Society, AustrianSociety of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) and internationalsocieties, including the American College of Chest Physicians(FACCP), the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons(AATS), the American Society of Thoracic Surgery, theGermany Society of Thoracic Surgery, the European Societyfor Heart and Lung Transplantation, and an active consultinghonorary member of young thoracic societies coming fromnew community countries like Hungary, Romania and CzechRepublic.He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Cardio-Vascular Surgery and serves as an editor and reviewer inseveral international journals.   7. 7. David P. Mason, MD is a staff surgeon in the Cleveland ClinicDepartment of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He holdsjoint appointments as a staff surgeon in the Clinic’sTransplantation Center in the Division of Surgery and in theCleveland Clinic Cancer Center. He specializes in generalthoracic surgery, minimally invasive thoracoscopic andlaparoscopic surgery, lung cancer, esophageal cancer,malignant mesothelioma and lung transplantation. Dr. Masonis board certified in general and thoracic surgery.Following an undergraduate degree from Harvard University,Dr. Mason received his medical degree from Columbia Collegeof Physicians & Surgeons in New York. He did his internshipand residency in general surgery at the Brigham and Women’sHospital in Boston. He continued his clinical training byaccepting a position as Senior Research Fellow in VascularSurgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, followed bya fellowship in Thoracic Surgery from Brigham and Women’sHospital.Dr. Mason has held academic appointments at Johns HopkinsHospital in Baltimore as Assistant Professor of ThoracicSurgery and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston as aResearch Assistant in Vascular Surgery.Dr. Mason was appointed in 2004 as a staff surgeon in theCleveland Clinic Heart Center, Transplantation Center andCancer Center.He has authored or co-authored several chapters in medicaltextbooks on his specialty interests includingvideothoracoscopic surgery, Barrett’s Esophagus, video-assisted thoracic surgery and gastroesophageal reflux. Smedira, MD is the Surgical Director of theCleveland Clinic Kaufman Center for Heart Failure, Director ofthe Cardiac Transplantation and Ventricular Assist DeviceTherapy Program, and a cardiac surgeon in the Department ofThoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He specializes in heartand heart-lung transplantation, ventricular assist devices,ECMO, heart failure surgery, aortic and mitral valve repair andreplacement, off-pump coronary bypass grafting, myectomy,reoperations, and ascending aortic replacement. Dr. Smedirais certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and theAmerican Board of Surgery. In 2006 he was also appointedProfessor in the Department of Surgery, Cleveland ClinicLerner College of Medicine of Case Western ReserveUniversity.Dr. Smedira earned his undergraduate (Phi Beta Kappa;Magna Cum Laude) and medical (Alpha Omega Alpha; M.D.with Honors) degrees from the University of Rochester Schoolof Medicine and Dentistry, New York. After completing hisresidency in general surgery at the University of California SanFrancisco Medical Center where he became Chief SurgicalResident, Dr. Smedira received fellowships in cardiothoracicsurgery, critical care medicine and research from theUniversity of California San Francisco Medical Center. He wona post-doctoral National Research Service Award fellowship.He then received a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at theCleveland Clinic Heart Center, where he was appointed in1995 as a staff cardiac surgeon.Dr. Smedira was voted the 2004 Teacher of the Year in theCleveland Clinic’s Cardiovascular and Thoracic SurgeryDepartment. He also has been a visiting professor at theMinistry of Health in Singapore, at the Atlantic Health Systemin New Jersey, Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada and theUniversity of California at San Francisco.As principal or co-investigator in more than 100 clinical trialsand studies, Dr. Smedira has focused his research efforts onhis specialty interests. Currently, he is the principalinvestigator of multiple clinical trials including the surgicaltreatment of ischemic heart failure, gene transfer to promoteangiogenesis in patients with advanced heart failure,bivalirudin as an alternative to heparin during cardiac surgery,rotary blood pumps such as the Debakey and Heartmate IIused to support patients until transplant, and two permanentleft ventricular assist device trialsDr. Smedira has been invited to present his clinical experienceand research findings at hundreds of conferences andsymposia worldwide. He is the author or co-author ofnumerous book chapters on subjects related to his specialtyinterests, including advances in cardiac intensive care, cardiacsurgery, assist devices, and treatment of heart failure. He hasauthored or co-authored hundreds of published studies andabstracts related to his research in leading peer-reviewedpublications, including The New England Journal of Medicine,Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals ofThoracic Surgery, and Journal of the American College ofCardiology, among others.

  10. 10. Rudolf Speich, MD, FCCP is Associate Professor of Medicineat the University of Zurich, where he is also Deputy Director ofInternal Medicine. Professor Speich graduated from theUniversity of Zurich in 1980. He completed his specialization ininternal, respiratory and critical care medicine. Together withProfessor Walter Weder, Professor Speich founded the ZurichLung Transplant Program. Later he built up the ZurichPulmonary Hypertension Program.Professor Speich has conducted extensive research in lungtransplantation, complications in immunosuppressed patients,interstitial lung diseases, diagnosis of pulmonary infections,bronchoalveolar lavage and clinical aspects of pulmonaryhypertension. He was a member of the 2nd and 3rd WHO WorldSymposium on Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). Forthe first time he described the impact of HIV infection on PAH,and thereafter was engaged in several studies on this issue. Atthe moment, his focus concentrates in aspects regardingquality of life in patients with pulmonary hypertension.Professor Speich is member of various professional societiesand reviewer for many journals in the field of internal,pulmonary and transplant medicine.   11. 11. Andreas Zuckermann, MD graduated from the University ofVienna, Austria, before working as a Transplant Coordinator inthe Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University ofVienna. In this role, Dr Zuckermann organized andcoordinated 173 thoracic transplantations. Dr Zuckermannthen trained in cardio-thoracic surgery at the University ofVienna and in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at St PöltenHospital, Vienna.Currently, Dr Zuckermann’s roles include Director of theCardiac Transplant Program and Coordinator of the Heart-Lung Transplant Program at the Medical University of Vienna.Dr Zuckermann is also a member of the EurotransplantThoracic Audit Group and is a member of several societies,including the American Society for Transplantation and theInternational Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. Hehas received numerous awards for his outstanding contributionto the area of transplantation and has 88 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
