  2. 2. What is Culture <ul><li>How groups of particular people live </li></ul><ul><li>The way we eat, sleep, talk, play, care oft eh sick, work and remember our dad. </li></ul><ul><li>Surface and Deep </li></ul><ul><li>Not always visible </li></ul>
  3. 3. Early understanding <ul><li>Cultural identity begins at the moment of birth </li></ul><ul><li>Children get how they and their family fit </li></ul><ul><li>Children struggle with fitting just like adults </li></ul><ul><li>Attitudes are formed by pre-school years </li></ul><ul><li>Use terms to sort (Jewish, black etc.) </li></ul>
  4. 4. In our programs… <ul><li>Attend to the differences </li></ul><ul><li>Individualize the curriculum </li></ul><ul><li>Create a “third” space </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes it doesn’t fit, deal with that </li></ul>
  5. 5. Respecting language <ul><li>Be a bridge between the two languages </li></ul><ul><li>Incorporate foreign language in program for the English speakers </li></ul><ul><li>Support and value the home language </li></ul>
