  3. 3. THAT’S MY KING – DO YOU KNOW HIM?
  4. 4. DEUTERONOMY 15  At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. ....because the LORD’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. ... 4 However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you...  7 If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them.  7 If there be among you a poor man, one of your brothers within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God has given you, you must not harden your heart or shut your hand from your poor brother.  Modern English Version (MEV)

  6. 6. JESUS MESSAGE  “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f] Luke 4:18-19 quoting Isaiah 61

JESUS MESSAGE  “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” Luke 4:43  “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God.” Luke 6:20  “...the good news is preached to the poor” Luke 7:22  “Jesus travelled..proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.” Luke 8  “..preaching the gospel” Luke 9

A BUILDING CONTRAST Jesus – outsiders welcomed Widow of Zarapheth (4) Naaman – Syrian (4) Simon – fisherman (5) Tax collector called (5) Sabbath healings (6) Centurions servant (7) Sinful womans tears (7) Pharisees – rejecting outsiders Furious Synagogue goers (4) Pharisees angry at forgiveness of sins (5) Sabbath Healing - Plotting against Jesus (6) “Why do you eat with sinners” (7)
  9. 9. RICH MAN LAZARUS Purple clothes Fine linen Luxury living Jewish Unrepentant Jewish nation? Beggar Sores No burial Jewish Gentile Nation?

FOR US  Jesus message is of hope that everyone is welcome to the Kingdom of God  Don’t be merciless to the poor  How we treat people in this life is significant for eternity as it shapes & reflects the state of our heart  It is the position of your heart before God that is the most crucial
