  2. 2. Introduction Summer is marked by travelling and exploring the great outdoors, barbecues and ice cream, swimming and beaches and relaxing under the sun. Whichever way you enjoy summer, ensure that you and your family stay safe and protected from summer-related injuries.
  3. 3. Swimming Safety Cooling off at the beach or in your backyard pool is a great way to overcome the scorching summer heat. Swimming is one of the most popular summer activities and can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages . Regardless, it is important to be aware of how to be safe in the water.

Swimming Safety Be informed of these swimming safety tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this summer: • Do not leave children unattended regardless of age and their swimming ability. • Swim with a partner and in a lifeguard-supervised area. • Ensure children and inexperienced swimmers wear life jackets but still provide constant supervision. • Make sure the backyard pool has appropriate safety barriers.
  5. 5. Biking Safety Biking is an enjoyable activity year-round but more-so during the summer season. It is a wonderful form of exercise and a cost-effective method of transportation.

Some bicycle safety tips to follow: • Wear a helmet and ensure that is appropriately adjusted to fit your head. • Ensure your bicycle is adjusted to fit you and that every component of the bicycle is functioning properly. • Be observant and follow the rules on the road. Use designated bike paths whenever possible. • Wear bright clothes and use reflectors so you are seen.

Boating Safety Boating is another popular summer activity and the following precautions will ensure that it is safe and enjoyable: • Use life jackets while on the boat. • Maintain a safe distance from other boats and the shore. • Keep seated while moving. • Ensure that you are not boating when under the influence of alcohol. • Avoid boating in the rain or in a storm (check the forecast prior to heading out).
