  • Another example of “service before self” is my scoutmaster, Joseph W. Bragg. I don’t know much about Mr. Bragg the man, but Mr. Bragg the scoutmaster I know much more. When I joined his troop almost 50 years ago, I was a very small kid and I saw in him a tall thin very old man in this even older uniform. I grew up in Mount Hope WV with my grandmother, no adult male relatives in my life, and in my formative years I came to regard Mr. Bragg as the most important adult male in my life. He helped me in so many ways, encouraging me constantly, always telling me what I can accomplish if I just put my mind to it. Thanks to him I served 4 great years on Summer Camp staff, learned to be self sufficient, and received my eagle from him in 1968. Time has faded so many memories of Mr. Bragg, but I remember this. You could always count on Mr. Bragg. He was always there, and always in uniform. What a legacy!
  • This “service above self” attitude is a true representation of the shared values of the Kiwanis International and the Boy Scouts of America. You can see that same type of commitment in the work this club does every year through your support of several causes dear to you—not to mention your support of Scouting for many years.Helping young Americans make the most of themselves and serve their communities is a high calling. For nearly a hundred years, parents, friends, and community leaders in towns across America have answered that call, and they’ve made Scouting what it is today. And when you give your time, or your money, to help preserve and enrich the Scouting experience for boys in this area, you continue our collective legacy of service. I hope that my remarks here today have inspired you to get involved in our movement. Dennis will be happy to sign you up. Indeed many of you may already be volunteering your time and money to scouting and for that I thank you as well.  Now I want to share with you the future of the BSA. In Mount Hope WV, my home town the sounds of bull dozers and loggers have been heard and the newest high adventure base for the Boy Scouts of America is taking place. Named in honor of Stephen Bechtel and for his gift of $50 million dollars, the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve has been born. The sign you see on the screen is erected just outside Glen Jean WV on the main route into The Summit. I took that picture in October 2010 as I entered the grounds as an invited guest to the ground breaking.
  • The ground breaking was impressive with the Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazucca receiving another $25 million dollars in donation from Walter Scott. The area in which we sat will be known as the Walter Scott Valley.

  • Regionalsubcamps will for the first time include room for Venturers and an amazing bridge will be built called the wing tip bridge. Let me show you a couple of videos that will tell the story of the summit better than I can here.
