  4. 4. Avatar Movie Summary Avatar is a very successful film made in 2009 and was directed by James Cameron who has also directed films such as Titanic. The film is set in the year 2154, humans are running low on resources and must venture out into space to the moon, Pandora. This planet is home to the native Na'vi, a group of humanoid creatures whose community is sitting right on top of a large amount of Unobtainium, the mineral that the humans are mining. Jake Sully, the main character is transformed into an Avatar, a Na'vi replica body and is sent out to befriend the Na'vi, learn their ways and convince them to move away from there current home base before it is destroyed. Jake realizes during his time with the Na'vi that what the humans are doing is wrong and that he does not want the beautiful world of Pandora to become the pollution filled planet that is the current Earth. He turns against his own race in order to stand up for what he believes in and to do what he thinks is right.
  5. 5. Main themes in Avatar 1) Greed 2) Imperialism 3) Power 4) Sacrifice 5) Hero vs Turncoat 6) Romance
  6. 6. Main Character Jake Sully Jake has been living life on earth as a party animal. His disability of being a paraplegic has not stopped him from enjoying life. He is perceived as lazy by the state of his living complex and he looks as though he is living in poverty, wasting away his life at pubs and parties. All of this changes when his brother dies during a mission for the US Army on Pandora, a far away moon, with forests and oceans, similar to the Earth of the Past. Jake is an adventurous character and willingly agrees. Jake learns the ways of the native Na'vi and falls in love with the land and their culture. Jake shows that he is a strong character by standing up to the humans and protecting and leading the Na'vi.
  7. 7. The Hunger Games Summary The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross is based on the novels by Suzanne Collins. This movie was made in 2012 and is about the life of Katniss Everdeen. In the future setting, her dictator society is split into 12 poor districts ruled by the wealthy Capitol. As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol, each year and boy and a girl are selected by lottery to compete in the Hunger Games: a nationally televised event where selected tributes must fight to the death in a vast arena, leaving only one champion. Katniss's call to adventure comes when her 12 year old younger sister is selected and Katniss volunteers in order to save her sister, who would have little chance at succeeding.
  8. 8. Main Themes in The Hunger Games 1) Power 2)Sacnñce 3) Romance
  9. 9. Main Character Katniss Everdeen Katniss is a 16 year old girl living in the poorest of the communities, District 12. She loves her mother and younger sister Primrose dearly, as she shows when she volunteers as tribute in order to take her sister's place in the Hunger Games. Katniss risks her life by doing this and it shows how much she cares for her family and her brave and courageous qualities as the strong female character in the text.
  10. 10. Similar themes in both Texts: Sacrifice and Power Saciiñce: Sacrifice is when you must give something up oi risk something in order to achieve another thing. Katniss experiences sacriñce when she chooses to volunteer for the Hunger Games instead of sister Primrose and in doing so potentially gives up the family life she has known for 16 years as well as sacrificing her own health and safety by competing. Jake experiences his own sacriñces ll'l Avatar when he falls in love with Pandora and Ney'tiri. his trainer. He has been serving the U S Army on a mission and sacriñces his daily life as a human on earth as well as the promised operation on his legs in order to ñght for the Na'vi's Survival and the flora and fauna of Pandora. Both of these brave acts of sacrifices were made for the well being of others and this theme promotes the message that we should think of other people and be prepared to make sacriñces on our behalf. for the good of those who are not as well off as us. Power: In both cases the wealthier and higher groups have exercised their power in the wrong way and it has had major afiects on other characters within the texts In Avatar, humans use their technological superiority to destroy the beautiful forests of Pandora in order to mine Unobtainium, Now that the humans have this kind of power, all respect towards other life forms is gone, Whenever things donit go there way they resort to physical violence or they overpotver their opponent until they get what they want In the Hunger Games the Capitol over exercises its power against the pooiei districts by holding the Hunger Games on | ive television. The Games stop further rebellion against the Capitol and the government make life hell for citi7ens of each district This theme sends the message that power is can be have negative effects when used in excessive amounts or too much power is in the ttTODg hands.
