Project Methodology <ul><li>Face-to-face interviews with twenty Babson professors </li></ul><ul><li>Asked each the same three questions: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>What new teaching methods have you adopted in the past two years? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>What impact has it had on the student learning? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Who else should I be talking to about this? </li></ul></ul>

Tools Fall into Four Categories Improved learning means improving at least one of these four things <ul><li>Context – increased relevance & participation </li></ul><ul><li>Rigor – taking analysis to the next level </li></ul><ul><li>Synthesis – making connections across various subjects </li></ul><ul><li>Growth – encouraging personal awareness </li></ul>

  5. 5. 2) Breeze Presentation Pushes class forward and provides baseline context <ul><li>PowerPoint that moves and talks – a dynamic presentation in your own voice </li></ul>
  6. 6. 3) Capital IQ A challenge to take analysis to the next level <ul><li>Information is so much more accessible to students – this fundamentally changes the type of analysis they should be doing. We can expect more as teachers after they understand how to use it. </li></ul>
  7. 7. 4) Blackboard Quiz, Discussion, Blog Gets all individuals to engage material outside of class <ul><li>Brings everyone in the class to a common understanding of the most important concepts. </li></ul><ul><li>Spurs learning outside of the classroom </li></ul>
  8. 8. Unsolicited Commentary <ul><li>No more laptops </li></ul>An open internet connection is like a bathtub drain – mental and emotional energy are sucked out of the room
  9. 9. Context Additional Suggestions <ul><li>Elluminate </li></ul><ul><li>Use student backgrounds as examples – do research on them </li></ul><ul><li>Use as many real-world examples as possible </li></ul><ul><li>In-class simulations using games (e.g. Monopoly) or contrived situations </li></ul>
  10. 10. Rigor Additional Suggestions <ul><li>Force familiarity with robust, subject-specific databases, like FASB CD Rom </li></ul><ul><li>Require functional expertise by having students teach part of the class </li></ul><ul><li>Post extra material and articles online </li></ul>
  11. 11. Synthesis Additional Suggestions <ul><li>Cross-discipline, integrated teaching across subjects </li></ul><ul><li>Team case writing by multiple professors from different areas </li></ul><ul><li>Use a single case for simultaneous assignments in multiple classes </li></ul>

Personal Growth Additional Suggestions <ul><li>Give open-ended assignments that reward creativity and independent thinking </li></ul><ul><li>Write a personal vision that relates to the course, but is connected to broader, more personal pursuits </li></ul><ul><li>“ Pass the beachball”- type teambuilding exercises </li></ul>
