Wearables – an ecosystem
It’s not just about the device!
Wearable technology development requires a system approach
–There are multiple parts to the system
–We need to be able to balance the commercial and technical requirements across the system
Wearable sensor device
Smartphone / hub
App
Cloud / back end service
The benefits of wearable technology is in the actionable information and engagement it brings…. If you could do this without the device wouldn’t you do this?!
•Also remember…the smartphone is just AN option for the hub…

Uptake of smartphones reduces the cost of entry for new products/systems…
The uptake of smartphones means that most consumers already have part of the system in their pocket
Wearable tech systems can effectively ‘piggy back’ on this existing infrastructure
–Cost benefits
–Data capture is effectively omnipresent
On average, there were two smartphones for every nine people on earth, or 1.4 billion smartphones, by the end of 2013. ref: www.businessinsider.com

How to make it real? What are the tech challenges specific to wearables?
Size?
Weight? Comfort?
Power? How long does the battery last?
Cool factor?
Wireless range and path loss?
Who needs what information? What level of info (vs. data)? And when?...
...where is processing done?
Cost?

For example... let’s focus on : antenna design
Get this right and you can create a cheaper, smaller, more comfortable and higher performing wearable
It may be possible that an off-the-shelf antenna will deliver an ok product, but with attention to the antenna design you can get a really differentiated wearable product
The antenna performance is impacted by it’s shape , geometry and environment. Consider the impact of the body on the antenna… and the difference in body morphologies…
CC has recently invested in an anechoic radio test facility
Here is a link to an article on demystifying myths regarding antenna design for wearable devices

How to make it real FAST?
You want to explore and play with the design options to understand what is possible, and understand the trade-offs…you want to do this FAST
–We can do this using the CC Appcessory toolkit
Imagine if…
I want a wearable connected device… that allows me to monitor my sun exposure… I’m thinking of a hairclip form factor...
As a starting point you will need a UV sensor, a BLE chip with on chip processor, antenna, battery…
Input to toolkit
Export CAD file
& add form factor
In a day workshop we can work with you to explore the design options using the toolkit

How to make it real FAST cont.?
Imagine if…
I want a wearable connected device that helps me quantify movement/rotation in the body…I’m thinking I need a gyro…
It is very important consider how to balance the system requirements to create a successful wearable. Contact us if you’d like to understand more about the CC Appcessory toolkit
You could switch to an accelometer…clearly a different algo dev challenge but let’s explore the options
We can use the toolkit to explore the power implications of design decisions…

  • 5. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 5 Commercially Confidential Wearables – an ecosystem It’s not just about the device! Wearable technology development requires a system approach –There are multiple parts to the system –We need to be able to balance the commercial and technical requirements across the system Wearable sensor device Smartphone / hub App Cloud / back end service The benefits of wearable technology is in the actionable information and engagement it brings…. If you could do this without the device wouldn’t you do this?! •Also remember…the smartphone is just AN option for the hub…
  • 6. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 6 Commercially Confidential Wearable Technology Introduction Why now? How to make it real? What’s next?
  • 7. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 7 Commercially Confidential Technology availability The necessary components are now available at a cost, size and performance that makes new products/systems possible
  • 8. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 8 Commercially Confidential Uptake of smartphones reduces the cost of entry for new products/systems… The uptake of smartphones means that most consumers already have part of the system in their pocket Wearable tech systems can effectively ‘piggy back’ on this existing infrastructure –Cost benefits –Data capture is effectively omnipresent On average, there were two smartphones for every nine people on earth, or 1.4 billion smartphones, by the end of 2013. ref: www.businessinsider.com
  • 9. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 9 Commercially Confidential The rising adoption of cloud storage means that consumers have a place to store all the data that they are gathering about themselves The increasing smart infrastructure of data storage means that it can be accessible and secure Data storage and accessibility in the cloud
  • 10. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 10 Commercially Confidential Wearable Technology Introduction Why now? How to make it real? What’s next?
  • 11. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 11 Commercially Confidential How to make it real? What are the tech challenges specific to wearables? Size? Weight? Comfort? Power? How long does the battery last? Cool factor? Wireless range and path loss? Who needs what information? What level of info (vs. data)? And when?... ...where is processing done? Cost?
  • 12. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 12 Commercially Confidential For example... let’s focus on : antenna design Get this right and you can create a cheaper, smaller, more comfortable and higher performing wearable It may be possible that an off-the-shelf antenna will deliver an ok product, but with attention to the antenna design you can get a really differentiated wearable product The antenna performance is impacted by it’s shape , geometry and environment. Consider the impact of the body on the antenna… and the difference in body morphologies… CC has recently invested in an anechoic radio test facility Here is a link to an article on demystifying myths regarding antenna design for wearable devices
  • 13. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 13 Commercially Confidential How to make it real FAST? You want to explore and play with the design options to understand what is possible, and understand the trade-offs…you want to do this FAST –We can do this using the CC Appcessory toolkit Imagine if… I want a wearable connected device… that allows me to monitor my sun exposure… I’m thinking of a hairclip form factor... As a starting point you will need a UV sensor, a BLE chip with on chip processor, antenna, battery… Input to toolkit Export CAD file & add form factor In a day workshop we can work with you to explore the design options using the toolkit
  • 14. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 14 Commercially Confidential How to make it real FAST cont.? Imagine if… I want a wearable connected device that helps me quantify movement/rotation in the body…I’m thinking I need a gyro… It is very important consider how to balance the system requirements to create a successful wearable. Contact us if you’d like to understand more about the CC Appcessory toolkit You could switch to an accelometer…clearly a different algo dev challenge but let’s explore the options We can use the toolkit to explore the power implications of design decisions…
  • 15. 13 October 2014 S3908-P-577 v2.0 15 Commercially Confidential Remember : The importance of balance across the system Changes to one element of the system often affect others. Understanding this and managing the system architecture are critical.
