  5. 5. The earliest European settlements in North America were established by the English. They were: Roanoke Colony (North Carolina), Jamestown (Virginia), and Plimoth (Massachusetts).
  6. 6. Beginning in the late 1500’s, the English tried to set up permanent villages in North America.
  7. 7. One of the earliest English settlements was Roanoke, along the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina. A mystery surrounds Roanoke Colony to this day.
  8. 8. In 1587, over 100 English men, women, and children set sail for the New World.
  9. 9. They landed on the coast of North Carolina and called their new home, “Roanoke” (row-ah-noke).
  10. 10. Virginia Dare was born in Roanoke Colony. She was the first baby born to English parents in North America.

  12. 12. John White, the leader of the colony, returned to England to get more supplies. He couldn’t leave England for 3 years because of a war between England and Spain.

  15. 15.  Summary: Roanoke and Jamestown  Take out 3 colors  Highlight important terms (right hand side) – make      sure to highlight only the words Read the questions – label the questions as directed Read passage Once done highlight vocabulary words in the passage Find the answer to the question and label as directed Answer the questions in your own words on the back or underneath.
