### Feel The Power

1. 1. FEEL THE POWER Standard 3.3.8 Investigate and describe how moving air and water can be used to run machines like windmills and waterwheels.
2. 2. TERMS <ul><li>Matter </li></ul><ul><ul><li>anything that has mass and takes up space </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Mass </li></ul><ul><ul><li>a measure of how much matter is in an object </li></ul></ul>
3. 3. MATERIALS <ul><li>2 pieces of construction paper </li></ul><ul><li>Scissors </li></ul><ul><li>A hole punch </li></ul><ul><li>A push-pin </li></ul><ul><li>A pencil with an eraser </li></ul><ul><li>Markers or crayons </li></ul>
4. 4. HOW TO MAKE A PINWHEEL HTTP://WWW.ENCHANTEDLEARNING.COM/CRAFTS/PINWHEEL/ <ul><li>Start by making two square pieces of paper. To start making a square, put the two pieces of paper together. Fold the corner of the pieces of paper over as shown. </li></ul><ul><li>To finish making the squares, cut off the small rectangles, forming two squares (which are already folded into a triangle). </li></ul><ul><li>Fold the triangle in half. Unfold the paper </li></ul><ul><li>If wanted, decorate one side of each sheet of paper. </li></ul>
5. 5. CONT. <ul><li>Put the undecorated sides of the paper together. Make four cuts along the fold lines - about halfway to the center. </li></ul><ul><li>Punch four holes in the pinwheel, one at each corner. </li></ul><ul><li>Gently gather each of the four points (with a hole) to the center. (Be careful not to crease the paper.) </li></ul><ul><li>Push a push-pin through the four punched holes through the center of the pinwheel to attach the pinwheel to the side of a pencil's eraser. </li></ul>

ACTIVITY WITH PINWHEEL <ul><li>Have students hold the pinwheel, blow gently on it. </li></ul><ul><li>Show students the picture of the windmill again. </li></ul><ul><li>Explain how the parts of the windmill that turn, like the pinwheel, are connected to other parts that move as the arms turn. </li></ul><ul><li>Explain that windmills can generate electricity. </li></ul><ul><li>Discuss how energy from the wind turns the blades of the windmill and can eventually be transferred to electrical energy. </li></ul>
7. 7. QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT <ul><li>What happened to the pinwheel when you blew on it? </li></ul><ul><li>How are windmills powered? </li></ul><ul><li>How did you use the power of the wind to turn the pinwheel? </li></ul>
