Future Classroom Lab Teachmeet @bett 2022 The importance of environmental conditions • There are many doubts about open learning spaces, especially with regard to noise level. • Finnish FCLabs have been studying the environmental conditions of a learning space. • We have monitored for example the sound pressure level and concentration of carbon dioxide within the classrooms to find possible connection with learning, tiredness etc. • FCLab Tampere has a Telia IOT system with sensors and analytics services. The system extensively measures and stores information related to air quality and conditions, such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide content, sound pressure, etc. • Our goal is to commercialize an easy and affordable solution for schools to monitor indoor air and volume. We work together with Internet service provider Telia. • In Joensuu, on the other hand, the FCLab uses a solution built in the university without a commercial partner. In Joensuu the data is stored in the University's Azure Server and from there it is accessible to the staff and students. bcm-manage.teliaiot.com/…

Future Classroom Lab Teachmeet @bett 2022 A comparison between an open classroom and a traditional classroom: • We did an analysis on sound pressure level and concentration of carbon dioxide from sensor data provided by Telia in December. The results are promising. • During the monitoring of the lessons, the open classroom turned out to outperform the traditional classroom with respect to the concentration of carbon dioxide. • Whereas the concentration of carbon dioxide in the traditional classroom peaked significantly high, the open classroom maintained a steady and low level of carbon dioxide in its indoor air. • The differences in sound pressure levels between the counterparts were insignificant. • https://tinyurl.com/sensorointiraportti (study in Finnish, abstract in English).
