  • Here you can see that we have a SharePoint farm setup running SharePoint 2010.We also have a database that contains some data that we want to visualize in our Visio diagram. The creator builds a Visio diagram, connects it to a data source and links the shapes appropriately. The creator then publishes this diagram to the SharePoint site using the new file formatThe publishing process is now complete. Now that the diagram is published, clients can access this file via the SharePoint site within their browsers, allowing them to navigate the diagram.[does nothing]When the client requests a VDW file, either the PNG version or the XAML version is presentedFYI, If the client does not have Silverlight installed then the PNG version is presented. When the diagram is presented to the client, any linked data sets are refreshed and the diagram is rendered with the latest data. This includes updating data graphics so that the latest data can be visualized.[Complete diagram]
  • The Project Client has a dozen Visio Pivot Diagram templates available out of the boxProject tab / Reports group / Visual Reports buttonSelect the Task Status ReportAfter creating the Pivot Diagram, change
  • Included in SharePoint 2010 is the Visio Web Access web part which can be used to build pages on the SharePoint site that display published diagrams.Keep in mind that Visio Services can only render the VDW format. Any VSD or VDX files that are stored in document libraries will be treated just as they are today, with upload/download and document management capabilities provided by SharePoint. When you include this on your web part page you have access to many options and settings, allowing you to customize the experience for the SharePoint user.As you can see here we have theDiagram property that specifies the diagram that this web part will render. This property points to a published diagram in a document library on the site. You can disable the Open in Visio button so you can keep someone from opening the diagram in the client. One of the more powerful features of the web part is Periodic Refresh. This allows you to set an interval that refreshes the data recordset so you can sit back and monitor changes near real time. There is also the ability to connect the Visio Web Access web part to other web parts on the page. This allows you to setup mash-up based pages without having to write custom javascript. An example of this would be connecting a document library web part and a VWA web part on the same page such that when a document is selected from the document library, it is displayed in the VWA web part automatically.
  • As Visio provides many diagram types, it can be used by a variety of users within an organization.

  • As we have already discussed, Visio Services can refresh linked data recordsets. It is important to understand that the published diagram is not modified by the server, even when it is refreshed. The published diagram is read-only and is only modified by editing the file in the client.Refreshing the linked data recordsets produces a temporary copy of the latest data, which is then used to render the diagram, updating any Data Graphics or Shape Data fields.Supported data souces include…SQL – 7.0 up to 2008, using OLEDB or ODBC (DSN and DSN-less)WSS Lists – within the same farmExcel Services – XLSX hosted on same farm with Excel ServicesOLE DB / ODBCAnd Custom Data Adapters, which is the real focus of our discussion as any of the supported data sources are supported right out of the box, so any user is able to connect their diagram to data and publish it.I just want to also point out the data sources that Visio Services does not support. These would beAccess (ACE, Microsoft Access Engine)Excel workbooks that are not published to Excel ServicesSQL Server Analysis ServicesYou can use these in the client however when published those data sources will not be refreshable.
