  2. 2. Rationale In this unit, students will be exploring and utilizing the Big Idea of Past and Present. The world we live in today is compromised of precedents and influences from previous moments in time. Historical time periods and events shape the current world we live in and effect decisions and happenings in the future. Exploring past and present through aspects of global and personal history will help students make connections within and outside of themselves and originate an individualized understanding of this concept. This unit will utilize historical time periods to enable students to begin to think in the context of how the past effects the present and how we make connections to them through our current decisions and lifestyles in society today. Students will create connections within the Big Idea of Past and Present through a subsequent series of lessons which incorporates documentation, communication, and advertising, how one is affected by the past, and how it has made us see the world and who we are in it today. Such lessons will use photography, poetry, drawing, journaling, mixed media, and sculpture to enable students with the ability to gain an understanding of the concept of past and present and how this idea impacts our

Unit Objectives •Students will be able to understand how self-expression through art makes connections between past and present. •Students will be able to make connections to the idea of past and present through personal experiences, views, and beliefs. •Students will be able to explore the process of documentation and come to an understanding of the concept through the use of photography. •Students will be able to make connections between history and themselves through an exploration of photography by way of the idea of documentation. •Students will be able to explore the process of communication and how it can provide an understanding of history. •Students will be able to make connections between history and themselves through an exploration of poetry through the idea of communication.

Unit Objectives cont. •Students will be able to creating a drawing using the elements and principles of design properly. •Students will be able to make connections to the idea of past and present through creating their own advertisement. •Students will be able to create a three dimensional sculpture using found and recycled materials that is successful in the round. •Students will be able to create a mixed media collage that successfully conveys their ideas about the present environment the live in today. •Students will be able to use various collage and sculpture techniques to create an altered book that identifies how they see themselves in the world today.

Freeze •Create one final photograph edited Frame with Photoshop.What the students will do:Students will create a photograph thatcaptures a specific moment in time:past, present, or future as if they arephotojournalists while exploring thetheme of documentation and itsfunction.What the teacher will do:Show students images of famousdocumentary photographers, give aphotography and Photoshop lesson.

Sculpture •Create mixed media sculpture about past event that changed their lives.What the teacher will do:Give lecture on Anselm Keifer and showimages of his artwork. Will have a discussionAbout art based off experience.What the students will do:Create a 3-D mixed media sculptureeither objective or non-objective,whichrepresents an event from the past thatchanged their life.
