Polyolefin vs. pvc ideal material for shrink film packing

  1. 1. In the last few years, shrink film packaging has become quite popular due to its multiple advantages. This form of packaging is durable, cost-effective, and keeps dirt and moisture away. It is often used to protect and pack products like CD or toys. The FMCG sector uses this packaging for bundling water bottles, soda, and other products together. Even the vegetables and fruits are bundled together.
  2. 2. There are various materials deployed for this purpose, including polyolefin and PVC. Various manufacturers and suppliers are often confused on which material to choose for packaging purpose. To help them, we have discussed the characteristics of both these materials.
  3. 3. The thickness is usually 60 gauge, 75 gauge, or 100 gauge. The 60 gauge variant possesses excellent clarity and is extremely soft to tough. The shrink temperature is usually 350 degree Fahrenheit, whereas the shrink rate is around 30 percent. It is used for packaging of small toys, baked goods, board games, and printed products. The 75-gauge variant possesses reasonable puncture resistance and seal strength. This material, with standard film thickness, is soft to touch. The average shrink rate and temperature are similar to the 60-gauge variant. The uses include metal products, wood products, and even pizzas. The 100-gauge variant is ideal for shipping products. The products with up to 25 lbs weight can also be packed with this material.
  4. 4. Possessing decent clarity, 75-gauge PVC becomes rigid after the application of heat. The average shrink rate and temperature are 35 percent and 275-325 degree Celsius, respectively. It is ideal for non-consumable goods, such as CDs and DVDs. The 100-gauge option offers sufficient thickness and durability. With average shrink rate and temperature similar to the previous one, it is utilized for bottled products, dog bones and heavier books. Various firms use 200-gauge PVC for banding around shrink sleeves and bottles. This option offers high puncture and tear resistance and comes with high rigidity. You can expect fair clarity with its use.
