Confederate Forces? </li></ul><ul><li>Where is the town of Gettysburg? </li></ul><ul><li>About how many casualties did the Union sustain? What about the Confederacy? </li></ul><ul><li>Which outfit held on to Little Round Top on July 2 nd ? Who was their commander? </li></ul><ul><li>PLEASE ANSWER THESE BEFORE WE START AND TURN THEM IN WE WILL GO OVER ANSWERS AS WE GO ALONG </li></ul>

  3. 3. UNION VS. CONFEDERACY <ul><li>Fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, PA </li></ul><ul><li>Union was under the command of General George Meade </li></ul><ul><li>Confederates were under the command of General Robert. E. Lee </li></ul>
  4. 4. GEORGE MEADE <ul><li>Born George Gordon Meade on  December 31, 1815 </li></ul><ul><li>Graduated from West Point in 1835 </li></ul><ul><li>Took control of the union forces just three days before the battle. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Born Robert Edward Lee on January 19, 1807 </li></ul><ul><li>Graduated 2 nd in his class from West Point in 1829 </li></ul><ul><li>Took control of the Army of Northern Virginia after Joseph Johnston was injured at the Battle of Seven Pines </li></ul>ROBERT E. LEE

DAY ONE <ul><li>Union General John Buford and his cavalry set up defense on the ridges west of the town </li></ul><ul><li>Confederate General Heth would attack him at this position </li></ul><ul><li>Buford needed to hold his position until Major General John Reynolds could get there with his reinforcements </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Buford’s cavalry men were trained to fight dismounted as infantry </li></ul><ul><li>Major General John Reynolds was able to reinforce Buford but it wasn’t enough. </li></ul><ul><li>Reynolds was killed just after his forces joined the fight. </li></ul><ul><li>Confederates gained the town of Gettysburg but Union forces gained the heights just beyond the town </li></ul>DAY ONE CONT. <ul><li>General John Buford </li></ul>

DAY TWO <ul><li>The morning of July 2 nd Lee ordered General Longstreet to attack the southern side of the Union line </li></ul><ul><li>At the same time he told General Ewell to attack the Union line at Culp’s Hill </li></ul><ul><li>Longstreet's men will meet heavy resistance from the 20 th Maine at Little Round Top </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>The rebels were met with resistance from the 20 th Maine under the command of Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain </li></ul><ul><li>The rebels charged the hill three times but were unsuccessful every time </li></ul><ul><li>Chamberlain would then call a bayonet charge that would sweep the rebels down the hillside. </li></ul>LITTLE ROUND TOP

CHAMBERLAIN <ul><li>Born Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain on September 8 th , 1828 </li></ul><ul><li>A professor of rhetoric at Bowdoin College in Maine </li></ul><ul><li>He would raise to the rank of Brigadier General </li></ul><ul><li>For his actions at Gettysburg he would receive the Medal of Honor. </li></ul>
  11. 11. DAY 3 <ul><li>After the failure of the attacks on the second day, Lee ordered one large attack that would happen at the center of the Union line. </li></ul><ul><li>This would come to be known as Pickett’s Charge </li></ul>
  12. 12. <ul><li>The attack began with Confederate artillery raining down on the Union center </li></ul><ul><li>After two hours of bombardment Longstreet gave the command to attack </li></ul><ul><li>Pickett ‘s entire division would be nearly decimated and all three of his brigade commanders would be killed. </li></ul>PICKETT'S CHARGE
