5 Smart Ways to Follow Up (+3 Unique Ones)
Following Up is such an important thing to do in business; it may be THE most important thing to do (to make sales).
Neglecting this step is a big mistake!
It’s the greatest opportunity for service companies, small businesses, professionals and network marketers to close
more deals, make more sales and make more money. Dropping the ball on this step is just leaving money on the
table. Actually its more like picking up money off the table and handing it directly to your competitors.
If you follow up consistently, make it fun and personal, you’ll be wowed and amazed at the results. Once you’ve got
it down, there’s no reason to ever stop doing it.
BUT, one problem with following up is there are so many ways to do it. It can be overwhelming: Which one to
choose? Which way is the best?
The answer is: the best way to follow up is the one You will do consistently
Over the last few years I have helped hundreds of people in business improve their follow up skills. I’ve found
several ways that work, and some that don’t.
Here are my Top 5 Best Ways to Follow Up:

Phone Call: For those who still use their phone as a phone, there are also people who will actually answer
their phone when it rings. This is a good solid way to follow up. Talking voice to voice with another human
brings a higher quality of communication that’s just not possible with text or email or posts. When you get
someone on the phone you can also be more direct. They will appreciate that, and the whole process is sped
up.
Card in the Mail: Remember snail mail? When someone goes to their mailbox and finds a stamped envelope
with their name on the front, you know they’re going to open it. With a 98% open rate, this form of
communication actually gets noticed more than any other. Mail has the unique ability to cut through all the
digital noise. Saying Nice to meet you’ or ‘Thanks for you time’ in a card makes an impact. When you
personalize it with a photo of the person, from your recent meeting with them or an event, it reaches them on
a personal level.
Text: Texts get attention and usually even an immediate response. They’re quick and easy to send; in fact you
can use pre-written messages saved in your phone to send them even faster. Just ensure the person
receiving the text will know who its from, ensure its not a landline. And don’t over text. Mix it up.
Social Media: Similar to texting, messaging and posting on social media is easy and fast. You can also use
social media to continue building relationships with your prospects (and that counts as follow up). You do
have to be connected with the person first, and don’t forget to follow real world etiquette rules; no one wants
to be pitched or sold to as soon as they connect with someone on facebook or linkedin.
Email: This is the default form of business communication, and it is a wonderful way to provide information;
but that’s it, just information. Its not personal at all, and may not even get noticed right way. When your
person is receiving a hundred emails every day, yours could fall through the cracks. Send them because its
always good to do, but don’t depend on email to produce your results.
So those are the Top 5 …but what about those Surprise Unique Ones?
Here are 3 Unique Ways to Follow Up (you may not have thought of):
Invite them to lunch or coffee: reconnecting in person strengthens the relationship and provides a
comfortable setting for a follow up discussion.
Give them a referral for their business: the law of reciprocity applies here. In fact, you should be doing this
anyway for the people in your network. Do it as a follow up and just watch how much sooner theyre ready to
do business with you!
Send them a Happy Birthday Card in the mail: this is a great long term follow up method. Its high touch,
low push. They will contact you after their Birthday, and the door will open for you.
