PIFON Presentation to 2nd Agribusiness Forum  Local and overseas markets part of global economy  Pacific farming a part of Pacific way of life and culture.  Need for transformation and change in Pacific agriculture - a major challenge for Governments and Donors.  Farmer organizations (FO) relatively new in Pacific but have significant role in this process.

Pacific Island Farmer Organisations Network A membership based network of farmer organizations across 8 countries in the Pacific Region Evolved out of FAO regional project “Linking farmers to market” Became formalized with support from MTCP 2 IFAD support project for FO in Asia and Pacific. PIFON’s Reach PIFON Presentation to 2nd Agribusiness Forum Active in 7 countries – Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Samoa, PNG and Timor Leste Growing membership of 24 national farmer organisations Linkages with approximately 350 local farmer groups with a total membership of 25,000 farmers

Linking farmers to markets – role of farmer organsiations PIFON Presentation to 2nd Agribusiness Forum  Improving the linkages between small commercial farmers and produce marketers - the Vanuatu Farm Support Association (FSA)’s Spices Network.  Facilitating the supply of high quality planting material - The Samoa Farmers Association (SFA) supplying Tahitian lime germplasm; FSA improved root crop germplasm distribution; Natures Way Cooperative (NWC) Fiji’s certified papaya seed scheme; Kastom Gaden Association (KGA) - Solomon Islands, Planting Material Network.
